Looking for the right Printer???
I have just been scouring the websites looking for the right Printer for me.
So far I am really keen on theHP Officejet Pro L7590 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier. It is a bit expensive, but appears to be cheaper to run in Consumables by a country mile! Officejerks also has a $100 cash back deal going (not bad).
Has anyone else got one? Does it work well with a new iMac?
The only thing it doesn't have that I really need is the capacity to print to DVD/CD which is something I actually need. Can you get DVD only printers? Like just little things that don't cost much that sit on your desk?
Cheers - Tanya

Did you consider the Canon PIXMA range? all but the lowest end models have a CD/DVD printing tray. And if you're prepared to "get down and dirty" you can buy ink in bulk and refill the ink cartridges, thus saving a heap.

I myself purchased the HP Officejet pro L7580, and after researching printers for 2.5 months (I know) I bought it for good reason:
1. It is a massive overall long-time cost saver. Massive.
It does Duplex printing, which saves paper by printing on both sides.
It's black economy print is more ink efficient than even some laser printers, you get something like 1500-2000 pages per XL cartridge (from memory).
2. Scanner, tray feed, Fax, Networking ready, media card reader, sturdy design.
I also recommend buying it from Harvey Norman, as they will give you the best price by a long shot, especially if you buy something else.
I love this printer. Seriously. However, I feel quite the opposite about HP's after sales service. I bought the printer with the promotion of a free wireless printing device (useless to me as I network the printer through my router, but that's not the point). After 7 emails, 35 phone calls, and 11 months later, I received it. They're just damn lucky their printer was good. So make sure you keep all documentation when redeeming that $100, as experience has shown me with HP, anything is possible.
As for OSX compatibility, the software install DVDs were for Vista, XP, and Tiger OSX. No leopard compatibility, however it is available on their website as a free download (or call them and hassle them to send you a DVD). After that it works like a charm.
As for CD/DVD printing, you might want to look at Canon's range. I think the higher end MP range offer similar print options as the HP L7580, but with CD/DVD printing.
Hope all this helps. (Note: I am a student, I do not work for HP, I just love my printer)

My Canon PIXMA ip4500 is great and prints onto CD's, automatic double sided printing. Good photos, fast black and white.
Have you considered separate scanner/printer, I find my printers die faster than scanners.
I refill the cartridges, which is really easy and not messy at all. Printer Refills Cartridge Toner Inkjet Bubblejet Printer Ink Australia - Easyrefills.com.au in Queensland will send you all the stuff you need. It is really, really cheap.

Hey Ath
You are making me love the HP printer more and more. I have really researched this and all roads are leading directly to the HP Officejet pro L7580! I am so glad you confirmed this. I think I will go there and I have a friend who is giving me his old Pixma which I will trial for the DVD printing side. It is very important that I print directly to the DVD rather than use labels as they are cumbersome and not professional. I have them on my copies I make for the car and they are all lifting and bubbling - not good!
Think I might go by me a HP Officejet pro L7580! HP's head office is just up the road from me if i have any trouble I will get my little sign and sit outside their front doors! LOL!
Thanks guys
T
Edited to add: LOL (elnewb) - very funny!
Morgan - sorry I didn't notice your post - Yes I have considered getting two appliances and it looks like that is what I will do - thanks xx

I recently bought the HP L7590 for all the same reasons. So far I am very happy with it. You will find that the $100 cash back is a HP promotion and you will receive it regardless of where you buy the printer.

I love my HP C7280 all in one. Love that it has two paper cassettes, one for photo sized paper, pictbridge is handy, and the utilities seem much better written for the mac than other printers I have had including a brother all in one (which was crap).

Thanks everyone!
I have always been an Epson girl myself, but my gorgeous RX510 has ceased working showing only a red light and "Refer to Service Manual" but there is nothing in the manual/user guide which tells me anything about it?? I took it in for repairs and they say it will cost far too much to repair - get a new one!! Which means I cannot even use the Scanner aspect of it!! I am so angry as the printer is not that old! Aaaah - sheesh, I crossed over from the comfort of PC to an iMac, why not cross over from Epson to HP??
Cheers

+1
Also, if running costs are important, worth lashing out on one of the $100 personal laser printers, as well, for day-to-day printing. A little extra desktop space to find alongside the multifunction, but worst case running cost is about 2c a page.
My Brother unit runs even cheaper on recycled stock and refills are about $25 new from Cartridge World, delivering more than 2000 half-tone pages. I use it to save my band a fortune in poster printing costs, and it has done 1000s of the buggers.

I got it! YAY!
I purchased the HP L7590. I read HEAPS of reviews and found that every review praised the printer and its abilities, but hated the installation process (found it difficult) and hated the HP customer service (or lack thereof).
As for me! I read all the reviews and learned from all their mistakes and found the hardest thing was to get the puppy out of the box!! Seriously, I unwrapped, unstuck and plugged her in. I used the Mac OSx CD provided and it all went off without a hitch and I am THRILLED!! Easy peasy! Looks real pretty too! All I need now is to get my website up and running and some business! I am so broke! LOL!

This is indeed a timely thread.
I have been looking for a printer that could do fairly good quality colour prints and preferable also be used for faxing. I don't have a lot of space.
Just wanting to confirm that the HP L7590 is automatic duplex printing??? You don't have to pick up and turn the pages over etc?
THAT would be the clincher for me in this case.
I am still concerned about the consumables as I have owned HP printers in the past and whilst I have loved the print quality the cartridges were VERY expensive......

I can confirm that it DOES do duplex printing automatically (although I have not tried it yet). The inks are approx $40 per cartridge (for the larger ones), which may seem expensive but they black cartridge will do 2,000 copies!! That is a HUGE amount, before changing is required. The coloured inks will do 1,700 of even coverage before replacement is required. You also will only need to replace one at a time as some are used more than others.
The quality is awesome. I would safely say this printer is cheaper to run than my Epson Photo Stylus Rx510, and no doubt many others!!

Thanks for that! Now all I have to do is find the best online deal!!!
Living in such a remote area is a bother at times.
