TPG Ultimate Unlimited 256
Hi guys (and gals)

What do you think of TPG Ultimate Unlimited 256 that for $39.95 is offering the following:

Connection Speed: 256k/64k
Monthly Download Quota: Unlimited
Shaping: n/a
IP Address: Dynamic

Now I'm with Optusnet but the speed is sometimes crap and I'm paying almost 60 bucks for 21GB with shaping at 64K

How good is TPG? And that plan?

You will regret going down to 256Kbps ADSL.............DON'T DO IT!!!

Let me pose this question.... what good is unlimited at that speed??

hum? not sure.. but with optus i get around 300/500kb of download speed and it is a broadband! bloody hell...

so maybe is better a 512k/128k with 25GB download a month for the same price of the above?

i don't want to spend more than 40 bucks a month... i'm not doing online games but i do watch online videos like abc iview for example...

by the way, in ivanhoe (vic) there is no adsl2 yet....

You are aware that 256 kilobits/sec is actually 25 kilobytes/sec? (using simple divide by 10 math)
So if you can actually download at 300-500 kilobytes/sec on your Optus connection now, going to 25 kilobytes/sec will be a disaster.

my ADSL gets shaped to 256 if i go over quota; and it's unbearabley slow at that speed (32KB a second maximum just doesn't cut it any more)

You're probably getting 300/500kB(yte), whereas the plan you're talking about is 256kb(it) (which equates to 32kB(yte)).

Divide by 8 actually 256kb/s = 32KB/s

This is a valid shortening of Kilobits as well as Kilobytes.

Speed of data is 9 times out of 10 measured in bits, and not bytes.

I am with TPG and I am on their 1.5Mb plan.

When I get a decent connection I get around 160 Kilobytes per second.

Theoretical max for a 1.5Mb ADSL connection is 180 Kilobytes per second (1500 / 8)

Please take this as proof, and learn from others wisdom
