+1 for an outdoor antenna. I've got the EyeTV DTT and the supplied antenna got a signal but the quality was 50% and the picture kept freezing. As soon as I connected an outdoor antenna I got 100% quality - it's a standard VHF/UHF antenna outside sitting on my windowsill, not even on the roof.
A lot of it has to do with your location. Are hills in the way, do you get reflections from structures, do you have line of sight and how far away is the transmitter. The phase of the moon and how you hold your tongue are also important factors. It's basic trial and error, start with the supplied antenna and work your way up until something works.
