Harman/Kardon Soundsticks II

Does anybody know why there is such a price difference between

MacOnline - For all your Mac needs

Harman Kardon SoundSticks II - Apple Store (Australia)

and

Streetwise Australia: Harman Kardon SoundSticks II - 2.1 Stereo Sound System

Is the streetwise one a newer version or something? Anybody know?

Hmm...On H/K's website the installation guide says this:

So now they have a power button for $170 more!? (My current one does not have a power button)

That's hilarious!

They're great speakers though. Got mine right in front of me at the moment.

I love them, but the build quality isn't all that great. After a year or two, they start to crackle and pop when not paying music. Also, the case that holds the 2 speakers together starts to come apart.

We have them at work and I reckon they're junk (especially at the StreetWise price!). Bass is muddy, and the low mids aren't very good either.Which is a pity, since they look super cool.

No idea what's up with the price gap though. I might have guessed the falling dollar, but even still...

lol, i should have been a little clearer.

They're great speakers imo in terms of sound quality and aesthetic design. That is, at least for the first year or two until the build quality lets them down and i think reduces the sound quality somewhat at this time.

My Wholesale buy on the Sound Sticks II is around $350 not including delivery. RRP is indeed $439.95. Some might fine markup on those beasts right there!

*edit*
if you look at the first posted link it was added to their catalogue in 2005. I'm guessing these are new ones and reflect the now fucked economy

In reply to crackling comments...

I've had a set of first-gen (USB) SoundSticks since 2002, and they're still flawless. No popping, and sound great.

Regardless, they are definitely not even $350 worth of speaker - in any market

Its very easy to understand. The Australian suppliers of JBL/Harman Kardon products (Harman Consumer Group International) purchase them in Euros. Hence the pricing has fluctuated upwards dramatically. Streetwise having a high turnover and low stock on the SoundSticks have seen the price that they offer change dramatically. Assumedly, MacOnline must have alot of stock purchased months ago at a lower price.

On another note, why would you want to buy Harman Kardon SoundSticks when they are rather junk speakers?

Because other people may think they sound good. Depending on how well they hear, what other speakers they are used to etc etc. Maybe they haven't heard a decent set of speakers before?

Other than that people like the look of them, which I think is the main reason.
