Problem With Airport Extreme

Ok, so I just got a new Airport Extreme Base Station to replace our old D-Link router.

After setting up all the cables and it running from our home PC, AirPort utility says that there is no WAN connection, even though I have the cable running from the WAN port to the ADSL port in the wall. The activity light on the port is off, and a few other activity lights with Ethernet cables in them are on.

Appreciate any help fellas.

The AEBS is a router only - it does not have modem capabilities.

Normally for ADSL:

Wall -- Modem -- Router -- Computer.

Many 'routers' are actually 'modem + router' within the same box.

What Aladdin said.

So what do you do now?

Three options.
a) Plug the AEBS into the D link leaving the D Link configuration the same
b) Plug in the AEBS to the D Link and then set the D Link to bridge mode. Then configure the AEBS for PPPoE.
c) Plug in the AEBS and set it to bridge mode.

The second option sounds as though it is out of your league. You should have done some research before you invested.

Wow thanks guys. Appreciate the responses.

Ok, so the AEBS doesn't have a modem. When trying to set it up yesterday I had it it plugged into the PC via Ethernet which does have an inbuilt model (according to the device manager, it's a SoftV92 Data Fax Modem #2).

So if the PC is providing modem capabilities then is that not the source of the problem?

Erm... yes it is the problem. The PC has a dialup modem, not an ADSL modem. You need to either keep using the D-Link as has been suggested, or buy a super cheap modem/router such as a TP-Link TP=8810 ($39), set it to "Bridge Mode" (which removes its routing functions allowing your Airport Express to be your router) and then set up the Airport Express to connect to your ISP.

He doesn't need to buy anything extra. His D link modem could most likely do it.

The reason we replaced the D-Link is because it suffers constant drop outs, which needs the power to be cut off then to be plugged back in again.

So, just to confirm - the inbuilt modem is not ADSL, thus won't work? I've done a quick Google and couldn't find anything except for drivers for the inbuilt modem in the PC - not any specs or product information.

EDIT: I'm gonna give BigPond a call in a few mins and see what they have to say, hopefully the problem isn't as bad as suggested here.

It's worth checking to see if you have the latest firmware for your D-Link modem. It may be better after an upgrade. Or it might just be a piece of crap.

Yes the modem in your PC will only be dialup. Why try and run away from the fact?

Which part of the modem suffered dropouts? The wireless or ADSL component?

If it was wireless then just plug in the airport to the D-Link and use that.

If it was the ADSL then make the modem a "dumb" modem by using the PPPoE function of the Airport Express and putting the D Link into bridged mode.
