Game consoles and EyeTV

Hi,

I'd like to buy an Elgato EyeTV Hybrid and connect a Wii to my Macbook.

Has anyone out there used the Hybrid to connect a console to a Mac? Does it work as advertised, ie. with no latency?

Thanks

I wanted to get it (before settling for the DTT and using another TV for gaming) but I heard people had lag on PAL 60hz on 360 and Wii. Some say that playing their Wii gives no lag (perhaps because it doesn't require as much power as, say a 360) while others said they couldnt play at all. I didn't bother taking the risk.

As much as it may appeal to have your iMac screen do multiple duty, you're better off having a separate screen for your console. There is no way to eliminate lag completely by using a digitising solution such as the Hybrid.

I'm not bothered about miniscule lag that doesn't affect actual gameplay, but if it's enough to actually affect things then obviously it's a no go.

Has anyone on here actually tried it? Alan7948, did you try it with the Hybrid? I understand other EyeTVs have significant latency

My Wii's hooked up to my iMac through a Hybrid with no noticeable lag. It is pretty fuzzy but I sit back a fair bit so it's fine for me.

I'm going to dig up my old Sega Mega Drive and see if I can get that working through it too. I think it will have to go through the antenna plug because I don't have RCA cables for it.

cool thanks. How fuzzy is it?
Can you still make out words, etc?
I am not a purist for quality, I want to be sure that it's playable

Text is definitely readable and I don't have a problem with it.

As for the Sega, I don't have an RF cable for it so it's probably not happening anytime soon

Mega lag only occurs when the time shift enable is turned on as it requires your mac to record the content as MPEG footage to your hard drive which results in a 2 second delay. Without this delay its roughly 1 or 2 frames behind... I tested my EyeTV Hybrid with Smash Brothers on the Wii online and found it to be very playable, however the slight delay was slightly confusing for the button and eye coordination... not bad at all though. Mind you PAL60 is not supported by the EyeTV Hybrid so some games may not display correctly or at all if it requires to be played in PAL60 (eg a LOT of Xbox360 games)

How could you play Wii on a macbook? Such a small screen, and considering the distance you need to sit back to make use of the remote, I dare say it would be way too small.

I have a PS3 and PS2 hooked up through a VCR to my Mac using a hybrid. It works like a charm. I tried hooking my PS3 up to a larger CRT TV I had lying around, but it was incredibly poor quality compared to my Mac's screen.

I've played GTAIV, and Resistance and currently BioShock on the PS3 through the Mac.

I played using a Gamecube controller for Smash Bros, but for other games (Like Zelda) I had a bit of difficulty...
