Seagate Freeagent Configuration

I'm having some trouble with my Seagate Freeagent drive I just picked up. I have it plugged in via USB and Disk Utility refuses to erase the drive for me. No volume seems to be mounting, but there is a greyed out "disk4s1" in Disk Utility under the drive.

I'm really gobsmacked about this. I'm simply trying to reformat the drive for Mac OS X.

You don't happen to have Vmware Fusion or Parallels running currently, as the guest OS inside these programs may have grabbed the device from MacOS X.

No, VMware or Parallels are not running currently.

has it showed up as a drive on the desktop? you need to unmount it before you can use disk utility to reformat/partition/whatever. Remember to select GUID as the partition type.

I've narrowed down the issue. I can erase it fine with MS-DOS FAT file system but not with Mac OS Journaled. How do I select GUID as the partition type?

Just worked it out! It was GUID that did the trick, in the partition options. Thanks all!
