Question Need some clues (p.c. to mac networking)

I have two iMacs running leopard, one a G4 the other an intel machine. They are networked fine. I need to add a Dell laptop running XP to this setup.I have searched for help on this topic, but all the advice is for tiger or panther. Not much good to me. I need detailed step by step instructions. I am a bit clueless here. Any ideas? Where do I look? .........Ash

Hi Ash,

Being in a similar situation i journeyed the internet in hope for answers also. In Tiger previously you would go into system preferences pane, sharing, and then windows sharing. That option for some reason or another disappeared.

Firstly, on your PC create a "home network" or something which is in the control panel and network connections section i believe there should be a link in the left side bar with that offering. When you get to the workgroup name, by default it seems that the apple computers network name is "WORKGROUP" so type that accordingly and continue on.

Find the IP address of your Dell Laptop, then in your Mac open finder then in the top bar "Go" -> "Connect to Server" and type in

SMB://ip-address-of-windows-machine

I believe in the past that is how i have done it, and it continues to work currently.

I don't think that running the network setup wizard is necessary - in fact, I think that if you just plug them all together, you'll find that's pretty much it.

You will need to have the network adapter installed in the dell, which it most likely will be.
Then, find the IP address (google this) and enter it in the mac as above.

If you explain what equipment you've already got in place it might help..

Only of limited help. I can find my iMac on the p.c., but I do not have any access to any files. The PC doesn't ask for a username or password. Also I cannot access the PC from the iMac. I enter SMB://10.0.1.5 which is the IP address of the PC. No go.

My setup is
:iMac 3.06 Intel core 2 Duo
4 GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM

G4 iMac 1.25GHz
1GB Memory

Dell PC running XP S/P3

The Imacs are working together, but neither can access the Dell PC. Both Macs are running Leopard 10.5.5.

Check your firewall settings on the XP box. That maybe blocking your connection.
