Apple TV - rented TV shows and movies & keeping them
If I purchase these (either through Apple TV or iTunes) - are they then able to be dubbed over to a file/another machine for posterity ? How would you do that ?
(Coming from someone who hasn't bought one yet !)

Either/or...i'm just curious about the process...i'm guessing if i buy it i own it - what then if i want to take it from the ATV to somewhere else ? Can it be done over the network back to my Mac as a video file ?

Renting does not equal owning. You don't have the right to keep a copy.

Correct - you are not allowed to keep rented copies. If you like the movie, buy it

But from what I can gather, TV shows are rent-only, yeah ?

No, you can buy TV episodes or even whole series. But they are not that much cheaper from DVD boxsets.

No, they're to buy. Movies are either rented or bought. Have you even looked at the iTunes Store?

it is a bit of a shame apple doesn't do some sort of "top up" thing like complete my album. you rent a movie, the file stays on your computer, and apple gives you the option of paying the difference to buy...maybe in the future

Thanks all...Half Goon - to be honest I use iTunes but haven't bothered looking up the TV/Movie thing yet, they don't interest me until I have a use for them.
I'm thinking a Beyonwiz might be more the style - i did see somethng on the Apple website about how if a product is purchased on the ATV it can't be moved from there but it's higher res, yet if you buy something via the Mac, it's 640 x 480, uprezed for the ATV when it plays.
Plus i'd have to buy a N router to get streaming going.....more cost than it's worth right now. (Then again, so is the Beyonwiz !) - bring on overtime !

You can rent hi def movies...you can't buy them, either on the store or on the Apple TV.
Edit: Also, streaming works fine over G. You don't need N, but it is preferable.

The point is, if you have an N router, but a G device connects, the whole network speed falls down to the G level. In fact, if an A device connects, the same happens, everything slows down to the slowest device.

Apple TV Synposis.
Gday all.
I wanted to talk about the Apple TV and found this place to be the most appropriate place to post it (I work in Communicationsm, can you tell?)
Apple TV is quite simply a toy. Does it fulfil a need? Well, that depends on if you are a fantatic for toys or are practical.
The whole idea behind apple tv for the end user is
1. Renting HD Movies or Buying them
2. Buying shows in HD the day after they are released
3. Renting and Buying SD Movies.
you sit on you couch and you have a virtual play and then buy. 50% of the time for me, its been cheaper than going to the stores to rent a DVD or HD movie. (petrol, cost of rental, effort)
For Apple its about Itunes revneues and building their HD portfolio for studios. Hence dual revenue (from us and the studios)
Music:
Same as above; but NO RENTING music option (maybe try, buy in the future with a coding lock?)
hence its a TOY and not a practical media player solution. For that there are devices out there.
I have a sound bar by Phillips and it plays almost anything via the DVD player (avi, DivX etc) and can actually read all my avi, real player, div X files when I plus the 350 GB Hard drive into the USB slot in it.
its about using this toy to have a HD experience. You need to use the HDMI cable and a HD TV. For sound there are various options (use your TV or your home theatre system)
I am really content with this toy. its great fun. it saves me looking stuff up on the net or looking at crappy Avi files.
I dont mind paying for the HD rental movies and buying the shows in HD.
I looked at buying a show in itunes and looked at Jbhi fi for the DVD's. I ended up saving 15 bucks off the whole season.
Do i care that its not portable like a DVD - Nope!
Why ? I just unplug the Apple TV, the HDMI cable and go to a mates places and plug it in there (also have Component AV cables + converter for projector)
I am carrying my Apple TV instead of my DVD
happy to assist anyone that may have had issues with the product. I only got it a week ago but i have played heaps with it so ill try to do my best.
