I think my external HDD is dead...

I have a Maxtor 250Gb external HDD. When I plug it in either with firewire 400 or USB it is not mounting. The light flashes at the front but no drive is shown on my desktop. I can only assume it is kaput, but if anyone knows any way I can get it to work, or how I can get the files off, I'd greatly appreciate the advice.

Does it show up in diskutility? If not, it's likely it's just the case is "kaput" first. Swap the drive out to another case to test.

new_life: try a different computer. If still no joy, it could just be the enclosure that has failed you but the drive itself is intact -- transplanting the drive into a new case may do the trick for you, but if it still doesn't want to behave in a new case, then the drive is definitely very sick, possibly beyond the point of being able to recover anything.

If you're in Sydney (or prepared to pay postage) I can attempt recovery; I'm good, but I can't guarantee results. PM me if this appeals.
