External HD Strange Sound

Hum? Do you know the sound you external HD does when you copy something or you read something from it?

Well, at the moment I'm not doing either of these operations but the HD is still making that noise.

Does it mean someone is accessing it or what does it mean?

Thanks!!!

It could be Spotlight doing indexing in the background, paging to virtual memory, etc. In other words it's quite normal and nothing to worry about

Yeah, I sometimes hear it start up at like 3am and get worried too! LOL! Ended up convincing myself it was just spotlight as Byrd suggested, freaked me out for a while though, thought I was getting hacked!

If your drive starts its read-write chatter noise and you're not doing anything with it, you can confirm if it is Spotlight doing its semi-regular checking by opening your Activity Monitor program and seeing if "mdsresponder" (Spotlight's index-gathering sub-app) has a CPU load greater than 0 %.
