Taurus NAS Fan Noise & Throughput
I've searched the forums and noticed that quite a few MTAU members have the Taurus box. I really want to know how loud it gets, and if the throughput over the network is actually reasonable or not, with it touting a Gb interface.
I plan on using it just as a RAID1 mirror of backups.

I'm looking at buying one of these to use in RAID-1 mode with 2x 750gb drives for Time Machine and an Aperture Vault. They seem to be the best quality RAID-1 enclosure around. In terms of noise, it's certainly going to make noise when in use as two HDDs aren't quiet. But when not in use, it should be almost silent (drives spun down).

I've had Seagate drives that were so noisy, it would keep a narcoleptic awake. And the same for older WD (western disaster) drives.
Server-level drives are generally quieter, but even they vary.
A listing I found:
Quietest Hard Drive - Quiet Hard Drives
Interesting HD cooling fan: Frizzbee Inaudible Hard Drive Cooler
cooler = quiter = longer life (apparently)

Wish SmallNetBuilder - Small Network Help - Home would review the Taurus

I was looking at getting a Taurus - Most likely what I will end up with when I decide to go for a RAID solution...

Is it the LAN version? If it is how are speeds over the network?

Sorry mate it isn't the LAN version. I have an Airport and Lacie 500GB hooked up to AEBS so that was my LAN solution.
Can i ask what benefits the LAN version present?

Basically it'll function as a NAS. You plug it directly into your switch and configure it via a web interface. Then any computer on the network can access the storage via the previously set permissions.
The beauty of this is that there isn't a need for a dedicated computer to be on to access the data. So I could store all my music (in RAID1 ) and be able to stream it all to any PC/Mac on my network.

I have a Tarus RAID (first version) as well as the LAN version.
I put two Segate 500gb disks in it and yes it is noiser than what i would prefer, same with the LAN version.
I also noted that the LAN versions power supply is failing after 7 months.

Doesn't sound promising. I've exchanged a few emails with epowermac.com.au Online Store - Australia - Express Powermac Solutions and they've indicated that the Taurus has issues with the service it provides for Macs - Bonjour, detecting on the network. Such a shame for something that looks so nice.
They've also strongly recommended Synology as an alternative Guess at the Taurus' price point, I shouldn't have expected much.

I would agree with the fact that the Taurus LAN is a very Mac frendly device, that is the reason why it is now here at work in a 100% PC environment.

If anyone is interested, Mwave are currently doing a promotion on the Synology 207+ for $419.95 + shipping.
I'd like a NAS, but I'm not sure if this is overkill or not. Still, from my brief googling, this unit has some good reviews and appears to be a reasonable price from a local supplier.
