Time Capsule!

Hi Everyone,

I just spent a good couple of hours trying to get Time Capsule working on a friends computer.

I have been working with macs for the last 5 years, but this was my first experience with the airport extreme as a router, and time capsule.

Equipment in use is as follows:
iBook 2.4gh
Time Capsule 500gb
Optus Cable internet

When I arrived things were not working, everything was connected and turned on, the green light on Time Capsule was on, but no wireless signal was being transmitted.

After playing around with diagnostics, and settings we decided to push the soft reset button on Time Capsule.

This did at least allow the wireless signal to be detected, and we went about configuring the system. This worked for a short time, but then the signal would just drop out?

We did go through the booklet and it did say that once you had done a reset it would only have short period where it would be available to change settings to correct an issue.

When ever we logged into time machine to use time capsule we used the right passwords and was always excepted, however time and time again the signal would simply drop out, and not be found until we hit the reset button yet again.

When going into time machine it was unable to find any sign of the airport extreme signal unless it had just been reset, same with Airport Utilities.

This is my first post here, and sorry its a oh crap help moment!

Any one able to help?

Ok figured out the crisis!

Airport does not like multifunction printers, as soon as the printer was unplugged it worked. I just got myself a time capsule today, and this was confirmed by the mac book tech in store when he quizzed me on the situation.

I have a multifunction printer plugged into my TC and it's working flawlessly...

You can't scan wirelessly, but I just unplug and use a long USB cable for the very rare occasion I need to scan something...

Well that's interesting then?

The multifunction that was interfering with my friends TC was very old though? Would there be any other reason why the printer would have caused this?

Also I just got my own TC and it took about 24 hours to do the first complete backup of 115gb, is this to long?

Well especially if it was on 802.11g I wouldn't be surprised, mine took a very long time as well. The quickest way is to just plug in the ethernet cord if you want the odd big backup to go faster.

There could be updated driver firmware on the multi-function's manufacturer's website to download.
That might help alleviate the problem.

One thing that might help is a program called iStumbler which can scan all visible wireless networks and tell you how much noise is on each channel and how strong the signal is.
