Nikon D40 autofocus weirdness
Here's a question for the photographers here.
A friend of mine has purchased a Nikon D40 with the standard Nikon 18-55mm kit lens, plus a Sigma 55-200mm lens to go with it. Firstly, the Sigma lens says "For Pentax" on the box, and it sure doesn't fit on the lens mount on the D40! That's just the wrong lens, right? There is a Sigma 55-200mm lens that works with the D40's auto-focus, isn't there?
That's the first weird part.... the second is that the kit lens, a Nikkor DX 18-55mm 1-3.5-5.6G II ED AF-S (I just wrote down every bit of information I could find) won't actually take photos when the switch on the lens is on "A" for auto (focus). On "M" for manual, it'll take a photo, but it's not in focus, and I have no idea how you focus it, since the only adjustable "ring" on the lens is zoom. Is this the right lens for the auto-focus mechanism in a D40? Has the salesman given her 2 lens that don't actually work with the camera, or is there another issue with the Nikkor lens that could explain why it won't auto-focus?
