I'm only just waking up to the possibilities with HD, and have seen some amazing footage done with the EX1 on Vimeo. A early morning surfing one from Australia springs to mind. Brilliant stuff, and what must be a lovely camera. A waste on me.

Plenty of things to play with, that's for sure. The Rome photo's were a collage I was just mucking about with, and my wife like it, so I kept it. Tuscany, wow. You will L.O.V.E. it.

Which version of QT do you use? I'm assuming I'll have to part with cash to get the upgraded version from the one I have.

Regards, Kevin
Cool, that explains the size, yep we are looking forward to italy! wont be editing the footage until i get home but will have photos and blog thru out the trip (see my sig for links).

I am using QT Pro but there are very few differences to the vanilla version these days and i think you will find it will do what you need.

iMovie is great for the dirty and quick edit - get it on the iWeb site and post to Vimeo or make a DVD for the rellies, but if you get serious about editing then Final Cut is a nice app to work with - its a steep learning curve and if you dont use it regularly it takes a while to find your way around but its so much more powerful than iMovie.

I do most of my stuff in iMovie and use FCE if i want a more Pro edit (effects etc).

I'm going to look into the HD miniDV tape thing. I've heard dropouts are fewer w/ these than w/ the straight miniDV.

Sorry can you just list what you were able to grab for $1300? ie: specifically what tapes, number of them? and which bag?

And possibly which store?

I can't purchase just yet as my flight to the US is Sept 5th, so have to wait until August 5th or so otherwise I can't get the GST back.

JB handed over three Sony DV 60min tapes and allowed us to pick any bag in their selection - in this instance a LowePro priced at about $33.
Nothing great but it'll do for now.

I just created a Group at Vimeo called "MTAU" so if any users wish to add videos for us to view they can add them to this group.

If my memory serves me. That looks like Rainbow Beach.

NO! I know that place now. I've watched some more and I've walked up that hill. That is near the golf course isn't it? I've forgotten the name of that place, but I remember as a kid you weren't allowed to go swimming there. Too many crocs.

Which one is it? Definitely not Shady beach.

Cheers.

EDIT//

My god. That Pre-school hasn't changed. That sign is exactly the same as the time I went there. They've painted the place though. Precisely how I remembered it. The play equipment is all new, but it is essentially the same.

Thanks for the awesome trip down memory lane mate.

We still swim there, lots of people dont tho'!

I dare say the pre-school hasnt changed much in 30 years, hasnt in the 15 yrs i have been here.

Just watched your Pre School footage, Rick. Nice stuff. How did you manage to get such a long shoot in under the MB limit on Vimeo though? Was it exported to a smaller format or something? Doesn't suffer, if so.

thanks kevin, i just used the recommended export settings in iMovie to QT, it surprised me how small the file was - 8 mins and only something under 200MB - as you say the quality is still nice.

The last video I made was just on 4 minutes, and it was 355mb! Must check the settings. Having great fun with it though, I must admit.

Ha! I remember the name now. I was thinking Ski Beach, but I know that wasn't the name. Wirrawoy was the Nhulunbuy Primary School house name. From memory it was Wirrawoy, Arnhem ... I forget the rest.

I left for schooling in Brisbane in 1997. My family made the move out of town in 2002 to take up residence here. But my dad and now my brother (just landed a job and is in the training process) still fly in and out for work.

We were talking the other day about the town. Retravision is closed now!! That's so ridiculous, you'd have to import all your electronics or even furniture. I guess the internet is a real blessing for such a remote locale like Gove.

But, great place to bring up a family though. I have some really fond childhood memories of riding around town, playing in the park with friends, swimming in the public pool and climbing those huge rocks in the town centre.

Oh yeah, awesome camera too

Jut thought I'd point out that the url is actually: TreatYouGoods.com Australia

I am trying to choose between theCanon HV30 or the
SonyHDR-HC9E

And right now I'm leaning towards the canon.... though I do love sony the 25p shooting mode is a feature that might swing me.

What is the benefit of 25p shooting? Is that like frames per second?

It's a Progressive Shooting mode, 25 solid frames per second.
one example of how this is useful is this shooting mode provides better low light performance.

generally If the result of the project is to be displayed mostly on
a standard television, then interlaced video is a good solution.

If the primary audience is for viewing on a computer
then progressive scan would be a better solution.
in my case I do work which has a final output on the web so the idea of
working with a progressive image from start to finish is appealing.
I also don't have a normal TV anymore, I have a HD LCD TV which supports 1080p

It's more of a gimmicky feature for those wanting to experiment with a 'film look' on their projects though really. I am still not sure if it's a feature that'll decide it all for me in the end.

I've always preferred the way sony builds their cameras so thats another question on my mind.

Anyone know of a comparison between the Canon HV30 (HVC MiniDV) and Canon HF10 (AVCHD - Flash Based).

I've read individual reviews but nothing that compares the two specifically.

I wouldn't mind getting one but if AVCHD is to be the future and provides true 1920x1080 recording then i'm torn between that at the HVC equivalent at 1440x1080.
