Isn't it low-light performance where the HV20/30 outshines the rest? I have to make a purchasing decision, too, sometime later this year so I'm curious and grateful for any piece of info.

this is a touch of topic but im considering looking into doing video work for fun
iv seen a few really nice clips and presentations of some nice digital work.
What apps were used to create something like this ? i have no idea what applications you mix to get something like that happening?
What matters to you

from what i researched, yes, the canon has a slightly better performance in lowlight by comparison with the sony, but the better build, easier accessed controls, better focussing systems and $200 less cost were deciding factors for me.
at the end of the day you wont go wrong with either, they are both in a class of their own for HD consumer camcorders with a lot of Pro features, in my case, living where i do I cant see a lot of need for the best low light performance whereas the build quality was a big factor with someone as rough on gear as me - living in the tropics, boating, 4WDing and travelling a lot as well as not being a 'precious' type of person!
one thing i can say for certain is the WOW! factor of seeing your footage in HD on a good TV is an amazing step up from a standard camcorder - and my old sony DCR HC32 was a pretty good cam.

How is the size of this camera, Galumay? I'm going to have to carry my Nikon D80 as well as this puppy all over Europe and US, so size is an issue.

Checked out a few reviews of this camera and there's only one thing the HV30 does better - a hotshoe and audio input so I can use an external mic.
That's important for a geek like me
Otherwise, the HDR-HC9E is probably better for those looking for a point and shoot experience as it's a few hundred dollars less and probably better interface wise (I've never been a fan of Canon's still camera gear for this reason).

Yes, I agree, these are important considerations. What are the Sony's viewfinder and LCD like, BTW? I know the HC20/30's viewfinder is a bit of a joke, but the LCD screen is pretty good.
Cheers
Steffen.

If you need an extended battery and want the Sony branded ones, they seem to cost a fortune. The best deal I have found on these are at Thatsverynice!, Digital Cameras @ discounted prices.. The knockoffs can be had for half the money, but I'm not keen on anything other than original. Sony charge double what these guys do.

what sites do MTAU's recommend for sharing HD video?

Hmmm, that's a tough one. I've recently been at WYD taking videos (one in which took over 1 hour in HD!)
I would say to burn it onto DVDs with AVCHD, but you'll need to make sure it plays back.

Nice Sony!
I just picked up a Canon HV30 a couple of months ago when looking at HD cam's.. I wanted mic input, hotshoe, ability to shoot 25p, and tape. I paid $1150.
I've since bought a Rode Videomic, Rode Stereo Videomic, a Miranda 20W Video light, a Manfrotto tripod and 128RC video head, a "hoodman H300" lcd hood, and a Raynox HD 6600 wide angle lens.
I really wanted tape because a) better quality from the compression, b) what if you bust your HDD camera after just shooting your holiday for 2 weeks. bye bye footage. c) archival purposes
It works mint with my Mac. I'm using iMovie and Final Cut Express 4.
I upload my shorts to Vimeo (hands down the best for HD sharing)
HD is very affordable, and usually easy to work with in post

a beautiful camera!
as a hv30 guy, i still think the hv30 kicks the sonys butt in a number of areas, but the sony is still kick arse and the price you got is awesome.
i just wish either camera had a focus ring...

Is it a proper hotshoe? I was using a Sony camcorder when I was in Sydney, but the hotshoe wasn't a standard one

aghh...i think you are right, its some weird sony hotshoe and you need an adaptor. still, fact remains it has one. i dont imagine the adaptors are expensive.
