Firewire800 extension cable ??

Hey guys, does a Firewire 800 extension cable exist ?? Reason im asking is because ive just purchased an external hard drive for Time Machine and want to position the external hard drive a bit further away from my mac....

Who would best have this ? Tandy ? Dick Smith ?

Thanks

I'm sure they exist but finding one will be difficult I'd imagine.

I think in this case, you're limited by the length of the cable supplied by the external, I'm afraid.

Unless you are prepared to make some DIY extension cables (not recommended).

I am sure you could get it from a place like Next Byte.

States you can have up to 100metres in length. Where you would find that length I don't know. How far do you want your HD, and may I ask why?

In practical terms, with a single standard cable, you can only go up to 5m. Plenty of 2m cables about though.

Try to keep it under 5 metres. As with all electronic signals they degrade over distance. With FW 800 due to its speed the shorter the better. But under 5 metres you wouldn't notice anything.

However going up to 50 metres or so you would.

You can only do 100m runs using FW/Optical (as a standard) or over ethernet using a Gefen box.

Standard FW has maximum cable length of 4.5 metres before requiring a device or repeater... the FW800 connector and cable used by Apple will not go 100 metres, that's for different stuff not currently used by Apple.
