Connecting Airport Express

Hello.

I have a 24' iMac and am trying to configure my internet to work via airport. I am on Optus and have a speedstream 4200 modem.

Now I plug the Airport Express device into the wall, plug the ehternet cable into the modem then into the airport device, then I plug my dsl line into the wall from the modem and plug my modem in and turn it on. The light on airport turns amber to begin with, and then goes green. I open the airport utility and it does not detect anything at all when I try to scan. When I plug the ethernet cable directly into the iMac from the airport device, it seems to detect the device only then.

Also, the one I bought was a demonstration model so I'm not sure but I might need to reset or something?

Please help!

Were there no instructions?

Anyway, easiest way is just to do a factory reset :

Follow these steps:
  1. Unplug the AirPort Express from the power outlet.
  2. Press and hold the reset button.
  3. Plug AirPort Express back into an AC outlet (still holding the button).
  4. Continue holding the button until you see the light flash green four times, which should happen after a few seconds.
  5. Release the button.
From here :
Resetting AirPort Express

Run the airport setup utility after doing the reset and you'll be fine. The way you have connected them together is correct. Remember to give everything a minute or so to 'boot up'.
