Where to get USB pci card for G4 Powermac
Hi all,
My little bro's mac is all maxed out on the USB front, and I want to get him a USB pci card.
His mac is a G4 733MHz Digital Audio PPC Tower.
Is there anything I need to look out for?
I would like to get a card with one internal port, to plug in a BT dongle.
Cheers,
Nick.

Cool, is it USB2?
How much would you be after for it?

I've got a USB 2.0 one. I never successfully used it, but if you want it, it's yours.
I bought it for a DA tower (667 MHz), so I am sure it fits.

sorry mivory, I need USB2 as my bro wants to use his Classic iPod with it.
Paxton, what do you mean you never 'successfully' used it?

Umm ... why not invest in a self-powered USB hub instead of overloading the G4 with extra stuff it doesn't really need to have?
additional: forget the idea of using a BlueTooth dongle internally. The G4's have an all-metal enclosure, so if it were hanging off a card internally, it wouldn't be able to transmit through the case! The AirPort on those machines is different, they have an antenna that runs outside of the metal case, up and under the left plastic fascia.

Check your local comuter shop as most generic USB pci cards use common chipsets and will plug staight in.I had a 400Mhz G4 graphite with the same lack of ports and a $30 generic worked first go.Just check the box first too see if it has mac drivers not that you'l be needing them

You need an NEC chipset based card. - They work without additional drivers on a Mac.
VIA chipset based cards do not work well or at all. I got a really cheap 4 port USB 2 one, (an $18 punt that failed ) and it will drive some USB 1 devices without a driver (using the OSX driver) but when its own driver is installed nothing works. The card is fully recognized in System Profiler and is bound to its driver, but nothing works when plugged into one of its USB ports.
I did some searching and discovered plenty of grief associated with generic PCI USB 2 cards on Macs. Apparently Belkin is one brand that uses NEC chips, and their web site also claims Mac support.

+1 for NEC chipset based cards here too. Some of the other brand cards that use a Via or Oio ? chips may work but they tend to be cheap and nasty. And also a bit of a lottery - some work straight out of the box , some don't.
Mivory clean out your message box. You have exceeded your limit and no-one can send you a PM.
I'm after a USB card for one of my older Macs ( 8600/225 - OS9 only )and I don't need USB2.0 speeds for it. It will only be for hitching up a printer after all. I'd love to get yours if possible. Shoot me a PM for how much for postage etc if no-one else has grabbed it.
Cheers , Stewie.

Good point about the dongle case, Brains....
I didn't want to get an external hub, as I like to keep everything as simple as possible, and I don't want to have to find space for another gigantic power brick....
I'l keep looking, I guess.

The G4 733 DA only has 12 mb/s USB 1 ports, so an external USB hub will only give you more USB 1 ports, not USB 2 400 mb/s. A compatible USB 2 PCI card is the way to go. - Or make more use of the 2 firewire 400 ports on the machine.

I never used it for USB2 is what I mean. It drove my printer and mouse, but at that stage, I still had a FireWire iPod. It was bought for the extra ports, not capability.
