New Apple screens to use laser or OLED?

Hi all,

I was just thinking about the new TV's about to come out the laser TV's (Laser TV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) and thinking that perhaps Apple will use this in new cinema display's.

I know the current screens are due to be revised and I also know that Laser TV's are about to be sold by the end of this year I have read. I really think that we will see this in computer screens very shortly and who else is the best to do this first but Apple!

Anyway it is just a theory I had and thought it would be interesting to share with you all.

If Laser TVs ever get released, it will be a while before this technology is used in laptops.

Laser TVs aren't even available to purchase yet.

It is more likely that OLED screens will be used in the distant future (as these are available already - small screen for big price).

There is another technology called OLED (organic light emitting diode) that is in the now as well. They can be made flexible.
Now can you imagine a roll up computer containing information?
Maybe Apple could call it, The Scroll.

It seems to still have issues, if that wiki page is anything to go by. While there are obvious benefits, like power usage, colour reproduction and weight, that speckle issue might still be a problem that would prevent it being used in the new ACDs. If they're mostly used for high-end graphics work, imperfections or resolution issues would be massive drawbacks. But hey, maybe they're fixed now! Its pretty cool tech anyways.

Actually I am thinking of the OLED more so then the Laser I got muddled up to be honest!

But in that case I wonder if we will see OLED then?

That is the little screen that Sony released the other day was it not?

OLED screens are still very expensive for a laptop application, I personally wouldn't expect to see one for the next couple of years.

everyone is saying that Apple really can't update their Cinema Displays because there isn't much to update. The way I see it is that they could have OLED Screens as a configuration option, aswell as making them a bit thinner, glossy screens and a built in iSight camera?

Laser displays? They'd be illegal in NSW...

Cheers

OLED is an awesome concept though

Is there any deficiency in the ACD line up at the moment that warrants an update. Only issues I can see in the current range is the pricing. Other than that what can they do?

Do you need iSight in your ACD = No
Do you NEED flash card slots = No
Do you NEED to plug in your XBOX, PS3, Wii, HD STB = No (You buy a TV for that) - Target market is professionals who can afford the luxury of an ACD, not tight arsed college students looking for an all in one to plug in their devices.

Does it need a redesign = Maybe, but they look good now (they got the design right all those years ago).

Is there any benefit moving to OLED over the current configuration of CCFL backlit screens? Personally I don't think so.

Laser is a rear projection method, so will probably only be good for large TVs. I can't see Apple using it ever for computer displays.

OLED looks to be the next successor to LCD, so I think we can expect it in either 1 or 2 revisions of the cinema displays.

OLED still has the issues of discolouring purples and sizing (not really applicable to Apple).

Until then, it would still be a while till these displays are installed in Apple's line of products.

Maybe we'll see OLED in the 3G iPhone... they have the benefit of lower power usage than an LCD and this might help slightly offset the higher power requirements of a 3G radio (they don't need a backlight) and they're already starting to appear in consumer devices - the iRiver Clix Gen2 uses an AMOLED. Another benefit of not requiring a backlight is that the screen is much thinner... 0.3mm in some of the newer ones.

Do you need iSight in your ACD = YES - a pin hole style very hidden and minimal camera would be ideal.
Do you NEED flash card slots = put them in the back hidden away (good to have)
Do you NEED to plug in your XBOX, PS3, Wii, HD STB = a HDMI would be nice.

As for a re design. it is a pretty nice design id say if they changed it theres a chance it wouldnt be as good as this current model and in saying that i would love to see a new ACD but does it need an update .... not really atm
