Airport Help Needed

Hi guys i something i want to try and set up, but i just dont know how to do it i have tried google but i'm not familier with all the terminology so it doesnt mean much to me

This is what i want to do.

I have a dlink wireless router with built in model ( all working fine) i can connect to the net etc with no issues.

I have an xbox with XBMC in the living room no where near my router.

I have an airport extreme which is doing nothing at the moment so i wanted to use the airport to connect to the network so i can stream from my macbook which has a 500gb drive attatched.

The question i have is can this be done my using an ethernet cable from xbox to airport and then get the airport to get data from my mac via the router

Hope that makes sense

thanks in advance

The only way you can use the ethernet port in that type of configuration is if you setup a WDS network. If the D-Link you have supports WDS (I think only one D-Link model has the correct support for the APX) then this should work, but you will find it quite poor for streaming video (WDS cuts bandwidth in half).

By the sounds of it, it should work. Without the need for WDS. Assuming the Airport Extreme that is connected via ethernet to the XBOX will be able to be configured to client mode. ie. It will talk via wireless to the Dlink. But will not provide wireless to other clients. It will only talk to the Dlink router as a client (much like a computer with wireless card would).

ANd the XBOX would believe it's talking to your network via ethernet, unknown to the fact it's going through a wireless device in client mode.

If you don't mind the APX not accting as an AP to devices near it and it is merely used to hook the Xbox to your network (then it will work if the APX can do client mode).

Purana: good in theory, except that the APX does not have an active ethernet port if it's in client mode. this will only work if it's able to be part of a WDS network.

It looks like the Airport Express clearly supports Client Mode. Shame about the Extreme.

I highly recommend an Linksys WRT54GL with dd-wrt firmware for a cheap unit to use in client mode to the OP.

It's a bit frustrating; i have an original airport express in client mode for music streaming. It's really annoying that i can't use the ethernet port on that unit for my PS3.. long term solution is to run a GiG-E cable into the lounge.

for all the apple base stations i've used; they support client mode. However the ethernet port is not active in that mode. I'm pretty sure astr0b0y has used tried it with all the ones i haven't

Hey, as mentioned in one of your other threads, I've been using an xbox with xbmc running tethered to an airport express in repeater/WDS mode (yep - the eth port is disabled in client mode).

It works OK for loading files (though it's slow) but isn't so hot for streaming video - it frequently glitches or pauses. Ethernet is fine however.

So no you can't use it, and even if you could, it would be slow. go ethernet.
