Tis a dead pixel. Tis normal. And you are stuck with it. And if it is not right in an obtrusive area of the screen most manufacturers consider it within specification.
Although some do have a zero dead pixel policy. Might be worth checking that out. I've had red ones, blue ones (least intrusive I find) and a black one where all three subpixels (RGB) are dead. On various screen over the years.
Wikipedia (I think) has a great page on how complex lcds are.... three "Sub pixels" for every pixel on the screen: 1440*900*3 for me: 3,888,000 (yeah I did that in my head) little lights to turn on and off at the right time to get your image.
If just one of those connections is iffy, you get a dead pixel. Bigger screen, the more massive the number and the more likely a defect.
Obviously manufactures can buy slightly faulty, but "Passable" screens for less money than perfect screens, so for the cheap displays we get these days dead pixels are becoming a part of life for some. My last two macs have been without them. My last powerbook had a red one.
