Question Which Dell Monitor

Decisions, decisions...

After doing a lot of reading re the pro's & con's between the ACD 23" and the Dell 24" & 27" monitors, I have decided I would prefer to go with the Dell monitor brand.

I was jut down a Fountain Gate Shopping Centre this morning, and happened to walk past the Dell booth. They had an older 2407 (swiveled to portrait mode) and also a 2707 in landscape mode.

I really liked the size of the 27" monitor. I am not a photographer, so exact screen colour replication is not a huge issue for me. I am more interested in screen refresh as I will be watching TV on it.

Last week the Dell site had the Dell 2707WFP UltraSharpTM 27" WideScreen Flat Panel Monitor for $1,399. This week it has a $200 on-line discount which makes it $1,199. Apply the 10% disocunt code and it drops to $1,079.10... That's looks like a really nice price for a 27" monitor.

Has anyone else got one of these monsters?

I had a 24" 2407WFP and it was great (now using iMac 24").

I'd probably get the 24" 2408's now but have never seen a 27" in real life so I can't comment - they have the same resolution (1920x1200) which might look weird on a 27" as opposed to 24".

Dell 2408WFP UltraSharpTM 24" WideScreen Flat Panel Monitor is what I would personally buy if I wanted a Dell monitor right now, $999.

08's being the 2008 models.
2707 is the 27" model from 2007.

Check out the Mac1 firesale at the moment
http://www.mac1.com.au/Firesale/Current_Firesale.pdf

You can get a 23" for $899.

My experience with purchasing items from the Mac1 firesales has been positive. No problems with any of the units, and they have all come with at least 11 months warranty with the option of Applecare.

I would go for the 24" as the 27" is the same number of pixels, just bigger so it can look a bit crappy if your not using high deff material.

Just a suggestion the Benq FP241W seems to be a great all-rounder Monitor. It has hdmi, 1080p, Brightness 500 cd/㎡, Contrast Ratio 1000:1, Response Time 16ms (6ms GTG) and you can rotate in portrait mode. More information can be found here BenQ Global - Computing
It uses a P-MVA panel which i think has a slightly better viewing angle (i think?) than S-PVA which are used in the Dell 24"/27" displays.
the FP241W is roughly around $950+ if you check on staticICE :: Australia's comprehensive computer hardware and gadget price comparison search engine

But anyway, if it is a dell you want i'd probably go with the 2407/8 the 2408 is currently going for $999 which comes with Free Sennheiser Professional Headset - ONLINE offer ends on the 27th.
$999 is the normal price so if you dont need it now and can wait till the 27th, they might even offer something better free or a price drop sale price.

I am sure Dell is bringing out some new 27" monitor in the next few weeks given the deep discounts given. I think 27" is great. I sort of made a mistake of buying a 30". The resolution is too fine to read journals from a distance without squinting... the first reason for buying a big monitor for me (the second being the 'mine is bigger than yours' mentality).

I'd go for the 27" size but bear in mind the 24" (2408) has better connectivity options for TV/video like HDMI, etc. I am sure the next 27" that comes out will have all those connections as well. Can you wait?

Pity the ACD doesn't come in 27" - that would be nice, if it did I would be very afraid of the price.

Cost is one of my driving factors, I can get a bigger 24" or 27" monitor for less.

I'm not really concerned about the missing HDMI connection on the 2707, as I will only be connecting via DVI. However before I make a final decision I need to go back to Fountain Gate Dell booth and have a really close look at the 2407 & 2707 monitors.

I'm really interested to see if the bigger pixels on the 2707 at 1920x1200 make text look blocky. That will be the big cruncher for me.

Will post tomorrow on what I come up with.

$500 is a bargain, especially for the HC model and also with 2/3rds warranty left.

I sold my 2407-non HC for $600 around 2 months ago, but the plus side was that it had over 4 years warranty left (I bought the 5 year next business day exchange warranty).

I have read and seen some vids on youtube that the 2407-hc and now the 2408 still have some similar problems where blacks look washed out and there are some ghosting issues. Probably might want to look into that. Im not too sure if its a problem with all or just some displays.

Can someone please clear up a question I have as regards widescreen monitors.
As far as I can see they stretch anything viewed on them for example websites.

I saw on a friends viewsonic viewing google earth for example. The earth viewed as an oval instead of circular. Distorted. Not desirable in my opinion.

I do a lot of work in Illustrator as an example. If I say draw a circle using a widescreen will it actually be an oval when viewed on a standard width screen.

Can any distortion be removed by adjustment?

Mac pro with a ATI Radeon HD 2600. Using a 19" CRT at the moment.

I've got a 2707WFP, and it's one of the best investments I've ever made in regards to monitors =D
