Question networking (sharing files) with a PC-HELP

I have pulled a PC box (Windows XP) out to try and recover some files and put them on my mac's (OS X Tiger) back-up storage.

I have successfully managed to network to the PC, though can only seem the access files if i place them in the 'shared' folder on the PC. I have enabled sharing for specific folders and they appear to show up when i connect to the PC, yet they come up as empty!?! Anyone able to shed light on experiences with this

I really have now idea what is happening. I have followed several different guides and tried different methods all to no avail. I am tempted to rip the drive out and put it in an enclosure—i am not even sure if that would work??

I am not wondering at all why i moved away from PCs so long ago

When you share the folders on the xp, you need the contents to inherit the permissions.

no. its an option when you apply sharing.

it should be "apply to all subfolders" and a checkbox.

or something like that

avolve, not only do you have to assign users to the access lists for shared Windows folders, you have to make sure the Mac and the PC share the same username and password and workgroup (the latter you can set with SharePoints).

Thats not right,

YOu need to add the user to the permissions group and apply settings to all sub folders. If you allow 'everyone' then yu do not need a username or password. If you apply the settings to the username and password on the pc, then a password prompt will appear when you try to access the folder from you mac.
