Best LCD for G4 Mac Mini ?

Hello, I wish to upgrade my Philips 190b monitor to something bigger.
I want to use it for photos and occasionally games with my xbox 360.
My G4 Mac Mini uses the ATI Radeon 9200.

Any suggestions under $500 would be appreciated.

Regards,
Rodney.

if you can find a Dell 24" display something like the 2405FPW or the 2407FPW i think you can pick them up for around that price nowadays.

Try searching here for various brands - yet look carefully at the specs as whatever it is, needs to have DVI / DVI-I / DVI-D Input.

What video outputs does the Xbox 360 have?
Some Dell monitors are good in that they have multiple inputs (eg. DVI, D-sub (VGA), S-video, and composite), so you don't have to mess around with cables. I have 3 devices permanently wired to mine (Mac Mini, PC, and PS2).
I'm just suggesting that you consider connectivity as well as size and panel quality.

As Mentioned a Dell should be able to be purchased with luck, Either that or an LG or Samsung would be my personal preference.

Just make sure to avoid anything above 24" as they will use Dual Link DVI which your graphics card is not. (Yes there are some screens bigger than 24" that don't use dual link dvi but 24" is a good cut off point)

Bit of thread resuscitation here! I also have a G4 mini and am thinking of updating my monitor. So I've been doing a lot of online research, and unsurprisingly it gets a bit confusing.

I've checked out the Dells and they looked fine but I've read reviews where they say the quality of the picture wasn't what they were looking for. I was looking at the SP2008WFP 20 inch but a review on : Dell.com Dell SP2008WFP 20 inch Widescreen Flat Panel Display with Webcam Ratings & Reviews put me off with mention of the highly reflective screen.

I've looked at various BenQs which seemed good but had a dead pixel policy that seemed overly confusing. Maybe confusing isn't the word, but complicated for sure.

So I've been looking at Samsungs. I like what I've seen, eg the 940BW : SAMSUNG's Digital World - LCD Monitor | 940BW PLUS
or the 943B : 943B LCD monitor - monitor SAMSUNG
or the 971P : SAMSUNG's Digital World - SyncMaster LCD | 971P

3 year on site warranty; zero dead pixel policy - good.

Needing Windows-only software (ie the MagicColor, MagicBright2, MagicTune etc.) for tasks such as setting brightness and contrast - not good.

And some of the blurb says "Mac compatible" for some monitors and, as with the last mentioned, "Mac Compatibility: O". What does that mean?? O as in zero? Or O as opposed to X, as in it's OK? Jeez, a simple yes or no would suffice!

So what I'm asking I guess is if anyone has used a Samsung monitor OK on a Mac, pref G4, and how they got around the Windows-only software anomaly. Or if you can recommend some other specific monitor with a good warranty etc!
Thanks.

I think the Samsung's are superb for the price, and as for colour tuning, one can calibrate that in the Displays settings of System Preferences.

I have a 19" SyncMaster 971P connected to my Mini and Powermac. It has a horizontal and vertical viewing angle of 178°, 3 Year Warranty, 90° Rotation - perfect for long documents, twin USB 2.0 Ports, and no, none of that Magic Tune Software works on a Mac, but then all that can be tuned in System Prefs.

It also has a "wave of the hand" on and off plate on its foot. Very swish!

Perfect for graphic design.

Don't know if it still exists any more, yet it's bound to have been superseded. Opted out of 20" LCDs as I didn't want to mess around too much with ratios, and I personally never needed anything that large.

Try seeking here.

Yeah, the 971P is still around -in fact, that's the main one I had my eye on, but the Windows only software was putting me off. But of course there is always System Preferences as you say. Hmm, that's good, if the voice of experience says it works fine! Thanks for passing your wisdom on.

19" is big enough for my needs too. No problems with dead pixels and the like?

I seem to be leaning in this direction, I think. As they say near the end of the New Inventors every week.... Anybody disagree?

G4 macmini, hmnn. In similar position here but I would be looking to get the latest intel C2D macmini instead of upgrading the LCD.

Need for speed! The G4 is feeling sluggish running 10.4.11.

Thought I might mention I picked up the Samsung SyncMaster 971P today; it had been waiting for me at the PO all long weekend.

Initial impressions are very good indeed, very bright and clear and calibration was no problem. The place I got mine from only had one left, and another site was expecting new stock in a couple of months, so seems they're popular!

Thanks to ClockWork for helping in making my mind up.

It's rather swish and hedonistic, isn't it?

Have you had a play with the 90° swivel yet? See internet and long documents in Portrait mode?

(The settings are in Displays inside your System Preferences).

Oh that's how you do it! Have it in Portrait mode now, whole different way of looking at things - though the typing seems to take longer to appear on screen this way for some reason...

I have just purchased the Samsung 971p for use with my mac mini. I can't seem to get it to connect / display / turn on using the DVI -> DVI cable though... I can connect it to my ancient powerbook OK using the DVI -> VGA cable. Of course the mac mini has a DVI connection so no dice for VGA.

Does anybody have the 971p working with their mac mini via DVI? Or do I need an adaptor?

any feedback appreciated...

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 971p connected to a Mac Mini Intel 2.0GHz - though it makes no difference which Mac Mini you have as they all have DVI out-put, and the SyncMaster 971p would / should have come with a Male DVI cable:

and the Mac Mini's corresponding Female DVI cable - at position E:

- thus they should fit neatly into one another...

Got the right DVI to DVI cable, with your SyncMaster 971p ?
