Question Getting Airport Extreme Base Station USB HDD & Printer to work with Linux?

Hi all

Is there a way to get Linux to connect to a USB external hard disk and to use a USB printer connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station? The networking works fine, but accessing the USB hard disk and printer has been a challenge.

Any guidance or advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I've been wondering myself, and the guy in the Apple Center just told me that the disk needs to be formatted on a Mac before plugging into the Airport; one would assume that the disk needs to be formatted in HFS+.

I wasn't very confident in what he had to say, so I walked out without buying it because I want to do some more research as it needs to work on my Mac, UNIX boxes and a Vista laptop.

I am leaning toward a dedicated NAS box now though..

Maybe this thread gets you started with accessing the airdisk?

As for the printer, I'm pretty sure it's accessible as a CUPS device, and probably gets announced regularly. Just start CUPS on the Linux box, point the browser to "http://localhost:631" and wait for the printer to show up.

Cheers
Steffen.

Yeah explains how to do it; but after some research I'm sure ill just go for a WRT54G with a custom firmware, and a separate NAS.
