Adding an Airport Express to an Airport Extreme Network
OK
I must be stupid or there is an easy way to do it.
I currently have an airport extreme, which I use for my home network. (1 PC, 1 IMac, 1 IBook and a PC Laptop). I have a laser printer set up on the extreme as a shared printer.
Now I want to also use an Airport express as well, so that I can stream my music.
I have tried to connect the express and don't seem to get anywhere. They Airport utility only ever picks up the extreme. What am I doing wrong??
As a postscript, I tried to load the software that came with the express and I am told it won't run on my version of OS....strange as I am running leopard

Plug in the express, then connect to the EXPRESS network, NOT the extreme network... Then use the wizard in Airport Utility to 'Add' it to your extreme network...
If it still wont show up, get a paperclip and hold down the reset button on the bottom of the express WHILE you turn it on at the wall... Hold until it starts flashing.

This isnt that hard to do... You need to configure the Express to join the Extremes network. I'd reset the express with the paperclip and then run the airport setup utility. Mine works well.. I have 1 extreme and 2 expresses.

I'd go with the last one - It's how I set up my network - I had my extreme as the system wide router and then I told the express to search for available networks. It did so - found the extreme and connected. One thing to remember - express is 802.11g/b not capable of n.
However... I will be dropping my express (probably selling it) as the Apple TV now does the same thing as the Airport Express does (airtunes) but using 802.11n instead!

But it doesn't extend your wireless network.... I have my ATV connected via Ethernet to my iMac 50m away.

The OP wants to use the express to stream his music - if he joins his existing extreme wireless network he won't be able to stream, no?
cmyk.designs has it right. Have you made sure you are holding in the paperclip while switching it on? What lights are flashing on the express?

While setting it up, why not plug it in via ethernet to the existing network?

Yes streaming works via AirTunes on the Expresses and ATV.
And the paperclip thing.. yes hold the paperclip in then turn in on whilst holding it in until the green light flashes quickly..

Agree - but the OP shouldn't try to join the extreme network...?

My extreme > express network was wireless. The express joined or extended the extreme network (I can't remember and I certainly did not need it to extend the network) and airtunes worked perfectly.

plug it in via ethernet to the extreme and check airport utility and set it from there, then go wireless after it is set to join the existing network...
as has been suggested...
