What's your printer of choice?

Hello all,
I know this comes up from time to time BUT I am thinking of buying a new printer, to use on a small home network, for uni/work, noticed colour lasers seem quite inexpensive these days...SO what's your printer of choice and what primarily do you use it for?

Cheers, Glen

I just bought a Samsung CLP-300. I haven't used it extensively yet, but it seems pretty good value for the price. Unless you need high quality prints (like photos), it seems a good all round printer.

Printer

Wouldn't go past a Kyocera

Very low running costs. Reliable. Very environmentally friendly. Don't replace drum till 100,000 copies!

But I only use mono.

Great topic!

I will be looking for a printer soon. Are the ones people recommending here completely compatible with Leopard?

I loathe ink jet printers. I never print out colour, so a laser does me fine. On the rare occasion I want colour, I'll use the $39 ink-jet I bought from K-mart

I own a Brother HL-5250DN, it's got duplex printing (will print on both sides of the page automatically), an ethernet port (plug it into my switch and all the computers can print to it, without needing a server turned on), consumables are pretty cheap (7,000 page toner for new for $90, refilled for $70 - drum isn't that cheap and will only last 25,000 pages) and I bought a 2nd paper tray for it, so it will take a full ream of paper (500 pages) at once so I don't have loose packs of paper open.

Best laser I've owned since the venerable HP Laserjet 5L (which is still kicking on at my parents place - it's been in service for about a decade now)

I have a FX C525A - works across wireless network with mac + pc:

the replacement toner = $120 per colour: have had it for 12 months and have not needed to replace any as yet.

It goes well.

I have an HP Deskjec 1180c. The model is a few years old but I got it last year for a steal as it was the last one left at Officeworks. Great A3 Inkjec - I'm yet to fault it.

I use a Kyocera 1020 for most of the office stuff & an Epson R800 for printing photos. Both good jiggers. I've had the Kyocera for 18 months & still haven't finished the original toner cartridge.

Printer of choice

Your choice of printer (like anything) depends on your intended use. My household rarely prints so no point wasting money on some expensive laser.

Our printer of choice is an HP inkjet multi function purchased from Tandy for $39.

Prints in black and colour to a satisfactory standard, scans and photocopies well. The cartridges are relatively cheap ($30 each if you buy on special ).
It's footprint is small (length/width of a A4 page) and it springs into life quickly when started (no prolonged warm ups)

Much as it pains me to say this but I also like the idea of being able to throw it away when its time comes without having wasted much money. (Yes, I hate todays throw-away society too )

*sigh* I bought an Apple LaserWriter II for I think $400 in 1997... I miss it... Ended up going to Red Cross when I left Darwin, cos it had paper jam and image quality problems, and no one around would service it. Was a great printer for the first 4 years or so that I owned it, and it would have already been 6 years old by then.

Now I just use the $79 cheapo inkjets, 3rd party refills...

I have the same printer its great. Bouight a couple of weeks back in the xmas sales, they go for around $300, plus samsung have a $100 cash back at the moment on the so you looking at $199 for a colour laser.

I detest inkjet they are very expensive to run, and you can count on them to have blocked jets when you really need them

I've got the network version of this... CLP-300N

I ended up just using it via USB because I couldn't get it working via ethernet...

Is a nice little printer... separate toner cartridges so nice and cheap to replace...

I wouldn't be printing photos on it, but IMO your nutz to be printing photos yourself these days when you can go to a lab and use their $20k machine for 15-20c/print... so yeah its not bad at all for colour document printing.

You should be able to get it for no more than $250 too if you have a bit of a search

I have a Canon inkjet multi-function. I mainly use it to print documents and photos, but one of the reasons I bought this particular model was specifically to scan from negatives - of which is does a pretty decent job.

But I loathe the pricing model: sell the printer cheap and charge like wounded bulls for the ink.
