Time Capsule + modem?

I'm considering a Time Capsule down the track. But what I'm wondering is how to get it connected to the net.

Should I go for a basic ADSL modem -> Time Capsule? or
ADSL Modem/Router in bridge mode -> Time Capsule?

I figure the latter, so I don't have stupid PPPoE clients running, just a login on the router. But if somebody could clarify this for me, it would be appreciated.

That said, could someone recommend me a modem/router that fits with the Time Capsule style? Thin, white, Apple-esque?

Both ways will work fine, there's not much advantage over either method. Netgear make modems that look like cheap Apple design rip-offs, but are good quality

Thanks for the info

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but if I just had a DSL modem, I'd have to 'log in' each time I wanted to go on the net, yeah? Whereas a router would have the login client built in, and would just sit there online 24/7?

I say 24/7, because I'm with Internode. Nuff said

log in?

I'm probably really confused here, but with my Airport Extreme I just plug my modem in the ethernet uplink port and it just works.

Yeah, log in. I've had to touch a couple of shitty D-Link modems at work, and you had to 'log in' via your OS. Might have only been the USB part though, not the ethernet. I don't know.

Hmm, that's really strange, 'cause my Dlink just works, no login required (apart from the wireless, which my laptop remembers).

I'm talking just the basic modem, no router functionality at all. I've played with the usb ones. The ones that have usb + ethernet must be different.

You can't plug your modem into an AirPort Extreme via USB. Plug it in via Ethernet. Place your modem into bridge mode and just do the lot via the AirPort Extreme (PPPoE auth, DHCP, routing etc).

There's no log in required Dude, it's pretty much plug n play. The setup your using at work is probably some shitty hybrid windows type arrangement.

the Time Capsule is a full airport base station (which is an apple branded router) with a hard drive built in; so just the modem should be fine… the Time Capsule will have the needed smarts… you'll just tell it your login details and it will stay connected 24/7 for you.
