Time Capsule

It makes perfect sense now why Apple hasn't implemented Time Machine to be able to use an Airport disk...

Says it can...

"Time Capsule also works great as a wireless hard drive whether you have a Mac or PC. It sets up in a snap, giving you a networked hard drive you can use for storing and sharing any kinds of files.
"

But isn't it an eggs in one basket approach??
I'd like to see the HD swappable before I stumped up cash.

Airport disks got me so excited when they came out I went out and bought a new station, however, since installing Leopard, the functionality that I loved under 10.4 is no longer there. It longer auto-mounts and transfer speed via wireless is a joke...

Buyer beware...

It will be interesting to see how like a NAS box Time Capsule will be. The feature set looks really good (local disk, gigabit ethernet, USB port for printer or additional disk, wireless) - the devil will be in the details.

The reason that AEDisk no longer works is due to the change way that OS X treats shared drives. At least that's what it seems like to me.

It's not like they removed it on purpose, I think it broke when they implemented the easy sharing between Macs (which I still love) and it's going to take a AE software update to fix...which will hopefully be around the same time that the TC start to ship...I can't see that they'd completely change the hardware that's gone into the TC so that it's not manageable through the same interface.

If you can use it as a normal drive, I'll be picking one up - Haven't decided between 500GB or 1TB, I could buy a 500GB and if I need more buy another one, effectively increasing my signal strength throughout my house!

ITs a blatent cover for not fixing the AEBS N Airdisk issue. I wont be buying one. Why should I buy this to get what the previous BROKEN product promised?

When did gigabit ethernet become standard on Macs?

My 2004 eMac is 10/100BaseT... Looks like the first 10/100/1000 was the Mac Pro in 05...

I guess there'd be no benefit in me getting this new device whilst I'm still using the slower ethernet... compared to my existing firewire external drive.

And whilst the main computer, hooked up to the airport, gets great speed, anyone else is only at wireless speeds... which don't really compare...

yeah, tough break. Hopefully a firmware update will fix it, no idea why it wouldn't.

Personally i'm waiting for reviews, but it looks like a goer. Probably the 500 as i'll just be using it for photos, docs and music.

Am I correct in assuming that to use this as a wireless backup option, you really need your computer to have n wireless?

i.e. will my G4 PB be able to sustain any sort of reasonable speeds accessing data to/from this with it only being g capable? the rest of my wireless network (linksys w/router and AEx is therefore only g too..

This is bloody lousy.

Right, so they CAN ship an AEBS with a HDD attached which can work as a networked Time Machine drive.

OSX issue? Couldn't possibly be as it smacks of deliberately crippling one device in order to force an upgrade to a later new product.

Firmware issue? Great, then let's see the AEBS 11n firmware update before plenty of us start a class action suit. Hurry now Apple, there's something in the Air.
