card readers won't read 4Gb SD card. Any ideas to fix this?

Hi All,
My new SD card reader that I bought wouldn't read my new 4Gb High speed SD card. I thought it was a problem with the new card, so I tried my old card reader. Nope. Wouldn't work. Both card readers function normally with 1Gb cards.

Any ideas about how I can get the card readers to work?

If the new card reader won't accept the card, and the old card reader won't accept the card, doesn't that mean the card may be faulty? Especially as you say they'll read your other ones.

Nah, card works fine. Can record onto it from my video camera. And transfer the images to the computer well and good. I just would prefer to use the card reader than to muck around with cables, switching the camera on, selecting connect to computer, and then remembering to switch the camera off when I'm done.

But yeah, card is not faulty, just seems to not work with at least 4 card readers that I have tried...

Not all card readers will accept a 4GB card, makes an interesting situation where some very hi market brands are not working.

I would go to a shop and ask if a card reader will take the 4Gb if they say yes then ask for a money back guarantee if it doesn't.

I think it is a case of the cards getting too advanced for the reader.

Have you had success with direct input to the computer via the camera?

Buy a new card reader, 4G SD cards have FAT32 that some older equipment can not cope with. I bought a multi-card reader from here http://pccasegear.com.au/prod3802.htm $18.00 no hassles.

I bought the card reader in Hong Kong. I didn't have enough time to take it back the next day when I discovered that it wouldn't read my card. Not to worry. I'll have to just carry another cable with me.

So this is a hardware thing in the card readers that can't be fixed?
Thanks,

Aside -- I find it quite ironic, especially with the casio exilim cameras -- the cameras are so small and light and the battery last for ages and it is all fantastic. But then when you go on tour you find that the dock, the usb cable for the dock, and the power brick for the dock take up twice as much room in your luggage than your teency little camera. Go figure.

I have been there and done that.

Now I have the Sandisk Extreme IV 4.0 GB (Compact Flash) with matching card reader.
And I will not buy anything from China because of the copy situation

Yeap, its a hardware thing with the card reader. The downside with SDHC cards is they need to have a compatible new card reader. That is why Sandisk bundle card readers with their cards.

RE: Exilim cameras: they're great, but as you said the older ones come with huge docks which you need to charge/sync with your computer.THe newer ones just come with a cable (I had a Z1000, upgraded to the 1050, which is cable only)

THe alternative is to get an SD+ card which I think is the best thing I bought in 2007. They split in half to reveal a USB connector. No more card reader needed ever!

SDHC is technically a different format to SD, so that'd be your problem. A bugger I'm sure, especially if new card reader software is required.

When you buy a card reader, make sure it's SDHC compatible.
