Digital Audio / Digital Video

Giday from a Newbie

My current flagship imac is an old iMac G3-400....it has a whopping I think 5 Gigabite HD.......and I have a 200hz one as well.

anyway to date all i have done is dial up internet, and word and excel spreadsheets for tax a documents and stuff.

but things are a changing.....

I would dearly like to get into a new iMac 24 2.8Gh machine

and I am wanting Elgato Eye TV to save High Definition TV onto my Hard Drive.

Now......here's my Question.......

Firstly is eyeTV the way to go for Digital TV recording...?

and secondly, once I have a HD TV Program saved to my hard Drive.....or a Song saved to my Hard Drive, how do i get it to my TV Screen and Stereo........and i like my Home Theatre......i have an NEC 50" Plasma, and a Reference Marantz Processor/Amplifier.

Other than Apple TV, do I have any options....as it stands Apple TV as I see it only supports 720p Video, and only has an Opitcal Audio out (I prefer Coaxial).

Is there anything out there that supports 1080i Video or better, and anything that will do Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 Digital Audio via Coaxial....?

Appreciate any advice.

I guess it depends where your computer is located in relation to the theatre - if the computer is within a couple of meters it's easy.

The iMac has an optical output, so you can use that for the sound. There should be no difference between an optical and coax digital connection.

And for video you can get a mini-DVI to DVI/VGA adaptor, depending on what connections your monitor has.

If you want transmit it from the other side of the house it's more difficult - there are a few options but someone else may know more. There's also the option of a mac mini in the theatre room, if the iMac is going to be elsewhere.
