Extending Airport Extreme network with Airport Express

I got an Airport express the other day at the same time I got my extreme, and I've only just sat down today to have a play with it.

I'm not going to be using it so much at home, but it will sit in my bag and follow me around so I can get some wifi going where i need it while I'm travelling.

Now. Just playing at home with it, I've tried to use the automatic setup to create an extended network. I get about 3 steps into the airport utility and choose the airport network to use, and name the express. I then get a message pop up saying...well, here it is:

I also tried to do this manually, but ran into some problems - mainly from my lack of understanding of the airport utility.

I do like the utility, but its a far cry from virtually every other router management app i've used. I see a lot of power in it though. Anyway, can anyone tell me why the message above may be appearing?

The airport express is plugged into the wall with no cables going into it. I'm connected to the airport express using my imac airport connection, and i'm connected to the extreme using ethernet.

thanks

I dunno if it will help, but try connecting to the Airport Express only without being connected to the Extreme (IE unplug the ethernet cable)

Or maybe plug an ethernet cable directly into the express and turn off your wifi?

You might strike some gold, but then again you might not.
