To mighty mouse or to not mighty mouse, that is the question
Whether it is nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of using a mighty mouse,
or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing in them.
To buy, to weep, NO MORE!
I am an editor and I need a new mouse and I really don't want to buy a mighty mouse because they are...well pretty crappy in my opinion. I really dig the horizontal scroll wheel and side buttons however. I was hoping somebody here might know of a similar mouse that is not so.... apple
I also need a new keyboard and was wondering if their are any 3rd party apple keyboards on the market? if not i'll just get one off eBay.
Cheers guys and gals.

Something from Microsoft.
Possibly Logitech.
I'm not kidding.
You'd be surprised at how many Mac users will use Microsoft hardware (mice) because (IMO) MS makes better hardware than software
-- when it comes to input devices (okay, just mice).

I love my Logitech S 530 Mac Keyboard and Mouse wireless bundle, however I have not heard a bad thing about the new iMac Aluminium Keyboards, so that one may be in the bag.
The mouse is great, and the batteries last forever, even when the red light is flashing to replace them (like mine is doing now), there is NO erratic movement of the pointer travelling across the screen or anything like that.

I second that. I am on the new Al keyboards (wired) and it is great! Especially being a MacBook keyboard user.
I am also using a Microsoft mouse (wired). You can find one that suits your needs from the MS keyboard/mice hardware site.

I don't have much nice to say about the mighty mouse. Sideways scrolling is nice until the scroll ball gets jammed up (and it will). Clicking right or left can be a dicey affair, and you can't do both at once!
Pressing the side buttons for expose gave me wrist cramps, anyway.

My mighty mouse started playing up a couple of days ago. Tried the normal vigorous rubbing, but just couldn't get it to scroll up. Took it apart and it was full of gunk in there, cleaned it up and put it back together. And it still wouldn't scroll up.
Went out and bought a logitech one yesterday, happy as Larry. No more mighty mouse for me.

I decry the Mighty Mouse. It's not a bad mouse, but it's also not a very good mouse.
It collects all sorts of crap easily, and that nipple ball is the worst offender. They aren't cheap to buy either. A $25 Microsoft mouse may not look the part with your Mac, but it's sturdier and cheaper.

They should stop bundling them with new Macs. Although they can't bundle with anything else (not even the Bluetooth model).
It's good for basic needs though. I guess.

Hi Dr. Nick!
If I had my time again, I would not have rushed out in London and got a wired mighty mouse just so I could have one before all the MacTalkers in Australia.
The ball is not working properly, and if i'm honest with myself it never really matched the accuracy in scrolling that a basic bottom-rung MS or Logitech mouse does.
Mine now sits in a drawer, while we use a stock-standard issue Dell/Logitech 2-button mouse. To get side-scrolling/movement again I am planning on getting a Logitech or MS that was one of those sidewards moving scroll-wheel. They seem neat and have less chance of jamming up.
I'll give one thing to the MM - the short cord is great!

Isn't that a bad thing? Especially if you're a MacBook user, who is right handed, with the USB ports on the LEFT side of the MacBook...
The only reason to have a short cord is so that you can plug it into the spare USB ports that are on an Apple keyboard.
(Unless you were being sarcastic...)

Kensington
I've posted here previously about my lack of enthusiasm for the MM - the ball sticks incessantly. And the sensors make right clicking a chancy affair.
I scoured the 'Net for alternatives and got the Kensington Trackball, and I've got to say it works great with my iMac.
The large ball makes pointer movement fast and accurate - the scroll ring is a great idea. It comes with an wrist rest, and I've not had any discomfort or soreness with using it since I bought it. Frankly, a standard mouse just isn't in my lixicon now - I think the Kensington is a really good option.

You talking to me punk?
Nope, it was an honest opinion - I like the short cord. I have a PowerBook and have ports on both sides so no issues for me. And yes, I do use it off of a keyboard usb port as well - so the shorter cord is a definite +1 for me.
Even with a MM coming off of the left side for a RH user, surely it'd be fine. How slow is your mouse-speed vs how big the screen is on a portable, and therefore how much movement do you actually need?
