Question anyone recommend a webcam for mac?

hi maccas -

just wondering if anyone had a good recommendation for a mac-friendly webcam. searched some old posts and found people liked the xbox 360 and some logitech models, but that was in 2004!

i'd love to get an isight but as for many of us it is way out of my price range just at the moment.

i'm running 10.3 (wish i could upgrade!) on a G4 ibook.

a also have a good sony dig video camera... maybe this would do the trick easily enough?

thanks everyone for your advice.

You won't get an iSight *NEW* anymore (unless someone has some hidden). You may find them on eBay or in the FS forum here at MacTalk.

Try this thread for some discussion about various cams or this thread. My flatmate has one (the Agent Cam that is) and does recommend it.

has your sony can got an iLink/Firewire port. If it does chances are it will work like an isight. My old JVC DV cam does. Great picture quality as well.

thanks redman and lenman (could be brothers!)

might give the sony DV a try, yep, it's got a firewire. just might be too bulky for easy use, but we'll see.

am i going to need any software to run it as a webcam do you think...?

i'll give it a go - otherwise the xbox 360 looks cheap and recommended.

ta again.

After the iSight was discontinued, Apple added drivers for various web cams to 10.4. So as long as you're using an up-to-date version of 10.4 or 10.5, something like the XBox webcam should "just work".

Problem is he/she is only using 10.3 - will these generic webcams work in Panther?

10.4.9 definitely brought drivers for a lot of generic webcams

this one works well on all macs, made specifically for macs.

Isights are very rare indeed and not as reliable as they should be. I have a faulty one sitting in my garage.
