External drives: USB v Firewire in Time Machine

Need to buy an external drive to get Time Machine up and running. Can I get just a USB one, or do I really need Firewire. Happy to go Firewire, but if it is just because it is faster, well, I can wait...

Thoughts? Will TM work with USB?

I'm sure TM would work with USB drives as long as it could mount on OS X albeit at a slower transfer rate. You can use iPods as well.

I first connected a USB HD and time machine ran fine. First backup took 30 minutes or so. Partitioned my firewire drive and changed TM to that drive and first backup took 18 minutes. Firewire is faster than usb but it will depend on how big your data changes are and wether the drive is connected more often than not to your system so it can do its job.

USB works just fine and is fast enough for most people's needs.

Eg if you decide to get a USB drive you won't notice your computer slowing down while TM is backing up anymore than you would a FW drive (which is not much at all).
