USB Wireless Network sticks and OS X
G'day guys.
I know this has been discussed in the forum before, but after reading though it didn't quite answer my question so I thought i'd repost it.
I've found an iBook G3 for my girlfriend to use for study purposes - the "peecee" doesn't quite work as well as it should anymore... something to do with a power chipset etc - and she needs to use wireless at uni. She has a USB 802.11b dongle, however her uni does not support B connections. I was wondering if anyone could make any suggestions of a cheap but compatiable USB 802.11G stick?
Also another thing that worries me is that the laptop appears only to have USB 1.1 - I noticed file transfers off my flash disks today took quite some time - and apparently most USB sticks only run at B rates in this mode. Does this mean she'll only get around 11-12mbs on a G network or she won't be able to connect to 802.11G networks at all?
Failing this she does have a PCIMA (have I got it right? ) 802.11G card for her older laptop. Would it be possible to get a USB adaptor for that card? I know three sells them for their 3 Broadband cards. Of course this is with the assumption OS X would work with the card...
In the end, we just want to get this laptop on a G network easily. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Can't you track down an Airport card for the 'book?
And not supporting 802.11b!?! I thought all G routers were backwards-compatible? Or at least Universities should be.

I believe the Airport Cards for the iBook G3 were only 802.11b. Plus we don't want to spend much - hopefully she'll only have the G3 until I get my new MBP and then she can get my G4 with airport
Yeah, it seems the university (Bond University, if anyone was wondering) does not support 802.11b. "The techies told me so", apparently. They're also extreme mac haters, so I didn't even bother going to them for recommendations.
Help, anybody?

the whole 'we dont support b' is bullshit; if they have a G network, you will be able to sign into it with your B card. i have done this many times with a toshiba portege 4010 at the uni network (adelaide uni) and with my snow ibook G3 with an airport card.
the only issue is support of WPA2 (required at adelaide uni).

It won't work at G speeds with USB 1.1, as USB 1 is only 11mbit (which happens to be the same speed as 802.11b) - 802.11g is 54mbit - faster than the USB port.

Well it does say that it is compatible with G3 iBooks so I guess that means USB 1 as well. You just won't get the full 54mb transfer speed obviously as what is USB 1 - 5mb/sec ?
Stewie
Ah beaten again by the man with the fastest fingers in the West !
You will still be able to connect to the network , just transfer speeds of data etc will be way slower.

Yeah I don't care much for that. As long as it connects to the G network
Oh, and the bidding has finished on that eBay item Does anyone remember the unit/model of it? It looked like an ASUS. Is this it?

Does it work with USB 1.1? I hear they're not easy to setup on macs either. I purchased a Belkin F5D7050 this morning and it refuses to work with USB 1.1 no matter what I try. This ASUS for $39 is looking pretty damn good if it works...

Jazza, are you sure the ASUS works with USB 1.1? I'd check with the seller personally first. The only USB stick that I know for sure works with USB 1.1 is the Edimax EW7718UN it's an 802.11n.

If it is an ASUS it is the WL 167G.

A lot of bottom feeders on eBay sell them. They do not work natively with Airport and so require ASUS software for mac which is on the supplied CD but not listed on the box.
I have one and tried to set it up but gave up after stuffing around for 10 minutes, but on a PC it worked straight away using XP zero config.
MSY sell them for $29, but don't always have stock.

Umart Gold Coast has a few in stock. I've already got the URL bookmarked with the drivers so I think I'm set! Just have to return this bloody expensive $79 belkin crap - I knew it wasn't worth the money, even if it worked...
