I put a WD 80GB into a USB 2.0-case for $49, the drive was free from a group that I attend.

Thanks Stewie, I'm probably going to get this

Very nice choice.

I bought a Passport Essential 320GB for my gf yesterday in white. Very nice and works with Time Machine just fine. The USB logo lights up in white LED backlit. On her one at least I don't know about the Studio ones.

Western Digital make A1 Hard Drives... and really shite external enclosures.

Not tryin' to rain on your parade, but SATA Drives like the ones I donated at the last MacTalk Meet in Sydney - the G2 Mini, by MacPower, are just as small, within the $120.00 to $160.00 bracket, have USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 - and to top it off - they're bus-powered, so no need for an external power source.

A drive enclosure with a high quality FW 800 bridge set, is a good rule of thumb for something that will last.

No offence taken, ClockWork.

Sorry I should have mentioned the gf has an MBA (the laptop, not the qualification ). No FireWire at all there, 400 or 800.

I think ClockWork's point is that by buying an enclosure that has FW800 (as well as FW400 and/or USB 2.0) means the chipset used is of good quality.

Thus, even if you only use USB, you can feel safe that the enclosure's not going to suddenly die on you.

The Clearlight range - as shown here - are all 2.5" PATA (IDE) compatible, as well as being Bus Powered.

I apologize to admin if this goes against MT rules, yet the number of PMs I would need to post out at this point, would require several Inboxes.

The Clearlight USB 2.0 Enclosure is $92.00 (2 Year Warranty).
The Clearlight USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 Enclosure is $180.00 (2 Year Warranty).
(Bus Powered on USB 2.0.

The maximum 2.5" HDD capacity is, as far as I know, 250 GB. (PATA only).

On the same page and just beneath the Clearlight range, we have the Mini G2 Enclosures - which take 2.5" SATA Drives, and are also Bus Powered on USB 2.0.

The Mini G2 USB 2.0 is $83.00
The Mini G2 USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 is $115.00
The Mini G2 USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 / FireWire 800 is $136.00
The Mini G2 USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 / FireWire 800 / eSATA is $126.00
(All have a 1 Year Warranty).

The maximum 2.5" HDD capacity is, as far as I know, 320 GB.

The Mini G2s also all come with a black sham leather wallet, to hold and protect that Mini G2 and its cables whilst you're on the move.

Both the Clearlights and the Mini G2s have very thick outer shells, which makes them far more resistant to knocks and drops.
Both models were designed and created by MacPower.

All the prices shown above already include GST, their respective warranties, Packing & Handling, and either Express Post or Registered Post to anywhere in Australia. (Australia only).

Both the 2.5" PATA and SATA HDDs for both models, are 5400rpm, and from experience, one best stick with Western Digital or Seagate, as the most dependable 2.5" HDDs.

2.5" Seagates between 160GB and 320GB are 7200rpm, if more speed is desired, yet personally, I'd stick with 2.5" HDDs that are 5400rpm, to reduce internal heat.

The lucky winner of the G2 Mini (USB 2.0 / FW 400 / FW 800) with 2.5" Western Digital 250GB SATA HDD, at the last MacTalk Meet, was ChrisG, so anyone willing to ask him how it's performing... I'm sure he'll regret me plonking his link here - but hey Chris - that's the price of fame.

MacTalker: Devil, won the Mini G2 USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 with 2.5" Western Digital 160GB SATA HDD.

I hope this answers all questions.

cheers,

ClockWork

Ah right.

Oh well, purchase has been done and drive in use. 3 year warranty will save it.
