I run two on my mini. One Terratec and one DTT stick. It works brilliantly and you can record two stream while watching a previously recorded third. 4 inbound streams might become a processor load/IO discussion though.

You could try but i reckon you would find thats way too much bandwidth for usb (and disks possibly)
I had 2 tuners over firewire at one stage and it worked well. The EyeTV software did a good job when it came to multiple recordings at once and all that

I run an Elgato Cinergy T2 and an Elgato EyeTV Hybrid. Up until EyeTV 2.5 this setup was fairly unstable. Now everything is a smooth as silk. On my iMac G5 2 tuners can record perfectly well at the same time even when watching a pre-recorded show. I think that my system could handle a 3rd tuner, but a 4th would probably be pushing it.
Multiple tuners around the 4 mark may be the domain of a MacPro with multiple HDD's

Hmm... or a dedicated media server with an XServe RAID as storage...

It's a long weekend and there's plenty of excuses to be recording TV, what with all the sport on - might have to give that theory a shot!

Would you not get some sort of auto stepping down in quality due to bandwidth getting squeezed through the USB or HDD bottlenecks?

Nope. It will always send the raw source. If your system cant handle it you will just get lost frames and things like that
