Software RAID 0... SATA -> FW/USB

Hi,

Is it possible to migrate a RAID0 made of SATA drives to USB or FW without loosing the array?

Basically my desktop died and I have this array of 3 drives in RAID-0.

Now, I am thinking of getting 3 SATA->FW or USB and power up that array again via USB or FW.

Is OSX clever enough to recognize the array and drives order?

Nope.

You're going to need to re-create the platform, with the same software, to gain access to that RAID.

that is no good ...

that mobo does not exist anymore.

i was hoping that OS X would automagicly recognise the RAID information off the drive and be able to reconstruct it. I know that changing the interface might be a bit of a problem, but in the worst case I could simply build another system that would support SATA to allow to "migrate" the data to another external RAID ...

Would this work instead?

I reckon that might work. I have been doing some research on RAID recently and came across a guy who said he had a RAID 0 that he had migrated over several different Macs. I'd be wanting to have a backup though. You'd have to be insane to have a RAID 0 without a decent backup!

You're right, but 700+gb backup storage doesn't come cheap.

Specially that this is only part of the data I have. I still have one 500GB, plus 1x 250GB, 2x200GB plus few more that are pretty full too.

Mostly Photo+Video, software backup, music, and other stuff.

Moral of the story is: don't keep stuff that you will regret losing on a RAID-0 partition that is not backed up
decryption is online now

Well Guess what, it worked no problems on a different mobo/cpu... Just hooked up SATA2,3,4 as on the first mobo and then booted the system and VOILA !! RAID HD showed up on my desktop.

Now, I still havent tried on USB but somehow my old machine started to work again, don't know for how long but for now it works.

Ok, more on this, I even experimented but reversing the SATA ports order and still works no problems.

Now, still have to try using SATA2USB adapters and trying if it still works.

I might actually go first by moving a single drive to USB and see, I bet that if this works it will all works... but that is a very long shot.

Just wondering why you want to go to usb 2? would be fairly slow for a raid device

Has an interesting comparison chart of thru put (Fibre Channel looks a lot of fun!)

Yeah... I reckon trying to use USB for this will just end in disaster. Anyway, good luck. Let us know what happens...
