Wireless setup

I've got a Dynalink 1025w modem/router and would like to use my MBP wirelessly. I have connection when the ethernet cable is in MBP but when this is removed I loose connection.

I've called my ISP and they couldn't really help, can any of you please help me with is?

Cheers

So are you using it via wireless or ethernet with your MBP? Your post is not clear, it sounds like its using ethernet (as you mention cable).

You should logon to the router admin page while connected via ethernet too it. Configure the wireless device in it as you please, then configure your MBP wireless to use it via wireless (when not using it via ethernet).

So could you give us alot more detail.

Sorry post not clear new to all this setup stuff.

I've got the ethernet cable connected, it appears that's the only way it can be connected to the net at the moment. When I configure the modem/router to be wireless and pull out the ethernet cord the PPP light on the modem/router turns off.

The airport is turned on and when I select a network (which I don't think I need-I'm the only one using it) it asks for password, I put that in but the ok button is not highlighted so can't click it.

I've been trying to setup for ages now and have gone back and forth to the router page and my MBR setup, I'm obviously not configuring it correctly.

Should I start again and reset the modem/router? How would I do this?

Which state you in? Maybe a member nearby could assist. The process is so easy it's not funny, but for someone new it's totally difficult to explain the process involved. If I have time I will do a few screen grabs from my router (which is the same unit) to try and assist. But that wont be for sometime, as my router is in a box ready for when we move in 8 weeks time and finally get ADSL back again.

In the meantime, when you do configure wireless on the router, you have to setup an encryption type, which requires a key to be input (this key is the same thing you put into your MBP when you select the wireless network). It will probably prompt for a password as you state, so you enter the key (same as the one entered in router wireless section) then select to save it into OSX keychains so it will auto join each time.

It would take like a few minutes to do for anyone who has done it before.

OK, the problem is that you're using an unusual type of wireless security - some kind of WEP - that is not quite compliant with mac - that's why you're unable to click 'OK'.

If possible, change it to WPA. It's more secure and, I reckon, easier to set up on macs. If that's not possible, try changing to using a hex key (instead of an ascii key) on the router.

It would be really helpful if you could post some screenshots. You can take a screenshot using command-shift-4. You need to upload it to a host (flickr, photobucket, webhost etc) to post it here - or maybe you could email it to someone (me if you like - my email is my-username@gmail.com) and they can post them upfor you.

With regard to the PPP light 'going off' when you uplug the cable - sounds a bit funny.
I think what might be happening is that your modem is set to 'bridge' mode and you are connecting through PPPoE rather than PPPoA. This means that your mac stores the username/pass and that when you connect, you 'dial up' through the modem.

The usual scenario is that you would store the user/pass in the modem/router, and that stays permanently online. You connect to it via ethernet using DHCP.

If you don't know what that all means, then can you please take a screengrab of the Ethernet Networking tab in System Preferences?

Cheers
