Airport Express - Back from the dead - I call it my 'Airport Success'

Hah-hah!

Tonight, I made history. Well, MacTalk forum history (I think..?) At least, a small, recent, but personal goal has been achieved - I've wrestled a dead Airport Express from certain plasticy fate..

As far as I can tell only a small handful of other people have had the inclination/tenacity/bother to do this. To hell with studying!

Observe!!!one

1.

The airport is dead and wrapped in a groovy sponge to protect it's shiny lustre. A vice secures it and a hole is drilled precisely above the mainboard power connector.

2.

The connector can be seen poking out.

3.

Here it is!

4.

Some telephone cables seem to fit the plug so I'll use them to power it temporarily.

5. Profit!! (Oh, well..)

6.

Never one to pass an opportunity, I stuffed the wires into the spare molex connectors in my PC. Red is 5.0V, Orange is 3.3V. Black is ground.

7.

It's a bit fiddly but yes - it boots up OK and I was able to configure it. Victory Dance..

Edit : Oh, how could I forget - the next step is to build a separate power supply using some 780X voltage reg chips and a cheap plugpack. I won't dick around trying to run the power through the original duck-neck adapter, but will just put a simple 3-pin socket where the hole currently is.

Thanks to TheArchitect.Mac for the deceased AX - it arrived this morning.

Nice work - it's always more rewarding to bring something dead back to life

I'm currently wrestling with a Logitech X680 amp, which powers up fine but doesn't make any sound out of any of the speakers. I've sourced the correct voltage regulators, caps and hope to repair it by replacing these. Good, but time consuming fun

Fantastic work! I wonder if the PSU failures of the AirPort Express are a case of 'built-in' redundancy. :/

Good work...

Is it the power supply that normally fails on the Airport Expresses?
