Airport extreme not so extreme

This is odd

I'm running a Macbook Pro with a new Airport extreme base station and up to date firmware. The other day I changed the radio mode settings to 802.11n only (5ghz) for what I was told would be best performance. It is faster when sitting next to the base station, however when I move a short distance away the signal drops right out and 10 metres away is undiscoverable. Reverting back to 802.11n (202.11b/g compatible) and the range is restored.

I thought changing the channel would help but under 802.11n only (5ghz) there is only 'automatic' as a channel choice.

I foolishly thought 802.11n only (5ghz) would give a stronger signal and offer greater distance - was I mistaken? Am I doing something wrong?
