Re StaticIce, I find that the prices are just as often lower once you get to the site as they are higher.

NB9W is nice but I don't use VoIP so the NB6Plus4W worked well for me. Good thing about the NB9W is that it's been around for a while and all the kinks have been worked out so it is a good modem and perfect if you're thinking of VoIP

Not so, the Speedtouch 536 can be upgraded via a web interface. Support can give you the file needed for this.
As for avoiding the modems the 536 is probably the most reliable consumer price level modem available in the market

The SpeedTouch 5-series have one of the most difficult, non-intuitive web UIs on the planet ... but they have the world's best line-filter electronics hooked to Broadcom chipsets, which makes them the best modems to use on low-quality Telstra copper (ie, almost all of it). If you're more than 3km from an exchange, you will get the best DSL speeds possible with a SpeedTouch ... it's why Telstra supply them

Take the replacement model.
You can pretty much be sure that any netgear box that says it's ADSL 2 compatible will work with Netspace.
So get the new box and then you know that the problem isnt due to your Firmware upgrade or a problem with your existing router.
A different router 'aint going to help if it's a config or line issue.

modem router
I have a Netgear DG834G which is Mac compatible and works flawlessly. I have ADSL, not ADSL +2; however I believe this model is compatible with ADSL +2.
It's a wireless modem/router, and cost $110. The same modem/router, minus wireless, is available for around $90.

Wrong...
See this thread
Thomson have removed the upgrade function from web interface. I know because I've wasted hours looking for ways to upgrade my modem with a Macit can't be done. I have emails from customer support confirming that it can't be done with a Mac.
I have the ZZTVAA6.105 firmware upgrade file, but there is no way you can install it with a Mac.
I've even tried to upgrade it using tftp, but without success. I did find some instructions on the web for installing the upgrade with tftp on a Windows machine, but couldn't find similar instructions for installing it with the tftp client that's supplied with OS X.
Working with tftp is pretty nerdy and beyond the level of competence of most users. And besides it shouldn't be that hard, all a Widows user has to do is run an upgrade wizarda simple 2 minute job.
I stand by my original advicenice modem, but don't buy one if you use a Mac.

I know it's very subjective, but I think the web user interface that came with my 536 is excellent. I've owned a number of broadband modems and the 536's interface is the best by far.
Perhaps you're talking about earlier models?

On this topic has anybody actually used to the Netcomm NB6PLUS4W with their mac or in particular a Powerbook? I'm looking for an all-in-one and this particular model seems to be getting rave reviews...

I've read the whirlpool thread that you linked to.
Several people have offered methods that work for upgrading these modems for most Mac users.
Really doesn't seem like a big issue to me *shrug*.

They did, and they were:
1 - Take the modem to a friend with a with a PC and upgrade using Windows
2 - Install Boot Camp and Windows and upgrade using Windows
3 - Upgrade using tftp
None of those options seem particularly Mac friendly to me, and if froggy's friend is about to spend their money on a new modem, then I reckon they are hassles best avoided. And it answers froggy's original question about whether a modem could be Mac incompatible.

Mac friendly? Maybe not.
But a significant issue? Definitely not.
Does the OP really not have a friend with a Windows PC for example?

Brains, you aren't called brains for nothing, are you!
All is working now, apparently, but the question remains - and I'm sure that we're not going to get any answers - why is it working tonight, but not last night?
Thanks for all your help and advice.
Cheers,
Andrew

I have relatives who have windoze PCs, but I wouldn't call them friends!
Yes, I do have friends who have windoze, but I'm not sure if my mate, for whom I'd been making enquiries, does.
Anyhow, all is resolved for him now.
Telstra - are you to blame?
Cheers,
Andrew
