RAID Enclosures and fan noise

Does anyone have any experience with RAID enclosures and fan noise?

I am considering something like the Taurus RAID External Hard Drive Enclosure

http://www.epowermac.com.au/product....on=17&P_ID=739

in a RAID1 configuration with 2 mirrored 500gig drives. However, I can't find anything on its noise levels or performance. I think Samsung or Seagate drives should be quiet but no idea on the enclosure fan.

Any other suggestions?

i just orded a couple of raid enclosures from http://addonics.com/, had to order them from the US, but atleast the exchange rate is good.

I bought the Pleides RAID-0 (I think it's the XP800-s). The noise of the drives is drowned out by the 40mm hairdryer fan in the back of it. I use it as little as possible because the noise is so irritating. May end up just selling it as I cbf experimenting with other fans. Hope your experience is better.

I have one of these. Not very happy with it because of the fan noise. The quality is a little dodgy. For example the feet are held on by double sided tape which is not strong enough- I've had to sticky tape them on. I'll probably rip one of the 500 Gb SATA drives out of it so I can disable the fan, but at the moment only turn it on when needed.

why not make one using an old PC case, a few firewire or usb2 > IDE boards and some spare drives?

you can get cases (w/ PSU) cheap enough, and bare drives are cheap, as are the usb2 > IDE boards. (firewire800 > SATA for the win)

if you cant be stuffed, granitedigital (US) do firewire and USB RAID setups
