yeah my PB has its built-in mic too, which, given its proximity to fans and keys works very well.. it has some echo, but is generally adequate for one-on-one short chats.
I will use it for large group conferencing with plenty of noise, so I need good audio, so the built-in thing on the Logitechs look the goods to have it all in one.

My logitech pro 4000 or whatever works fine on my g3 running 10.4.9 - it's the security camera at the frotn of the house.

Logitech have released some sweet webcams recently, and so after some research into macam and other apps to get cheaper cameras working, I have settled on one of these which I have on order at Harvey Norman - the Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks.
It is UVC (meaning it should plug and play with OS X 10.4.9+), has a 2.0 Megapixel camera, does HD video, has the top-level Logitech sound/mic system which is reportedly excellent, uses a glass Carl Zeiss lens, has a short 3-foot cable best for Notebooks, a carry case, and an adjustable clip to put it right where an in-built iSight would go. All for RRP$149.
They are also doing a similar spec'd model in a more desktop PC screen orientated design, with a 6-foot cable instead of the shorter laptop-esque 3-foot lead. It is the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 and is the same A$ RRP.
Both appear to be great options for those of us still using Mac laptops without inbuilt iSights, and others using MacPro's and older iMac's needing a cam for the top of their screens.
Once I get mine this weekend/early next week I'll do some testing and post back here. From the reviews I've read they are far better than the old iSights and the built-in models. Can't wait to get a hold of it!!

Just an update.
I picked up one of the Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks cameras from uMart in Brisbane this week - plugged it in, and was Skyping and iChatting within a minute.
Overall, it's a highly recommended usb webcam for Macs/OSX.
My only gripe is that the clip makes the camera cover a little bit of the top menu bar because of the size of the lens structure, but so do most of them.. And it's a specialist Notebook camera design, so the clip wont be big enough for normal LCD's monitors, so go for the 9000 model if thats what you want. Having only a short usb cable is great when it's being moved around the house!
I only paid $104, which was $40 less than Harvey Norman. Luckily for me the incompetent knobs at HN couldn't seen to deliver on their promised order.

Not the answer; but don't forget to try a DV handycam with firewire inputs. Because they work well, widely available to borrow, and has a dual function (can use as a handycam).
Personally, I find that not many people use their webcams.

OK, probably the original poster went out and got the X-Box camera by now ($59 at DSE BTW, not $50), but others might be surfing in looking for help in this area, too. (Edit: Hmm, seems they went for a $100 buck cam, see 2 posts up, anyway...)
Well, on a whim and a little web research followed by guesswork, I decided to risk one of these... the DSE USB Eye Webcam. (part number XH7767) I knew about Maccam, and reading the camera compatibility guide on their site, I determined there were an awful lot of cheap CIF cams that had "Eye" in their name that all used the Pixart PAC207 chip. Many of them looked for all the world like the DSE unit.
I dropped Maccam into my Applications folder, dropped the maccam.component into Library/Quicktime/... et voila! It works. Hmmm, no iChat. US$9.95 over at ecamm network for iChatUSBcam fixed that.
My aging G4 iBook now does cheap web chat, I don't need that MacBook yet, afterall. Total cost around AU$33 - WAYYYYY cheaper than a 2nd hand iSight and well cheaper than a USB 2 video compliant web cam. Only $19.95 for the camera alone if you don't need compatibilty with iChat.
As for the quality, well, you get what you pay for. Think Apollo moon mission live video, only in colour. Of course, for basic vid chat, who needs quality, just nice to see a face on the other end, hey? (Well, except maybe my face )

I picked this one up in Japan for less than $60. It's called a Logicool, but it's the same camera - and it's fantastic. Great picture, small footprint.

i just bought a quickcam 9000 and i gotta say - its the best webcam ive ever used.
leaves the apple isight for dead.
on the pc it has face recognition stuff and you can apply all sorts of awesome effects and masks that track your face. great fun - leaves photobooth for dead.
works on the mac too which is the main reason i bought it, all this windows software was a bonus. skype also detects it has a "high quality" camera and after a few seconds of video calling it changes from "video started" to "high quality video started" and everyone on the other end is amazed by it. i haven't seen from the other side so i dont know...

(Genuine request... for $60, with a mic, if it works, I'd get it over the XBox one...)

hi folks,
i want to share my little story. hehe. i wanted a webcam for my Powerbook G4 rev 2. Like we all know, its not easy to find one that works well on a mac. well the iSight is nice but too expensive and hard to find now. So my quest started for more than 3 months maybe.
and here it is, my superb webcam, the fantastic one hehe.
i removed all the webcam drivers that i΄ve installed. macam and iusbcam or something like that
for now it worked with yahoo and mercury for msn chats.
the webcam is the Hercules dualpix exchange. the greatest is its UVC webcam but only works with OSX 10.4.xx.
here are some links with a better review than mine. lol

ohhh, almost forgot. the price. i bough mine here in portugal for 60.23 aus dollars
btw, if someone wants to see the image quality for real and real time let me know. i will give my msn, yahoo or skype name doesn΄t work with ichat because i am on tiger

Someone who actually knows webcams should write an "article" or FAQ on this... It's quite a popular question people have about Macs...
(And then someone could test the Dalek webcam available at the ABC Shop and let me know if it works... )

MacCam is a free, open source generic driver for getting unsupported webcams to work on your Mac. I have a 5~6yr old Logitech camera that I was doubtful of, but MacCam worked like a charm.
There is a sizable list of supported cameras on the MacCam site.
I'd still advise checking the vendor's return policy in advance just in case though.
