Backing Up to External HDD - To Slow?

Hello,

Well I have been trying to back up my 320GB HDD which stores all my video projects etc on it to my external USB 2.0 320GB HDD.

I am using PsyncX and it seems to be so extremely slow. Is this because of the USB 2 connection? Or is it the software or something else?

Would there be a significant different in speed if I were to use a FW800 Lacie HDD?

Or could another option be 1000/100 gigabit backup to a server? Which is possible I just need the replace my switch with a gigabit one.

Any suggestions, please post up as its just to slow the way it is at the moment.

Cheers!

Matt

by slow what sort of speeds are you talking of, or how long exactly?

Could you provide any figures of how slow it is? Transfer rates? The amount of data to transfer and the time required to complete?

I've always found FW400 faster than USB2.

From memory a carbon copy clone of an entire 100Gb mbp takes about 2 hours to an external 3.5" FW drive.

Well maybe its normal then if its take 2 hours to do 100gb, but mines even slower...

16GB has taken 38 mins.

I have to back up approx 220GB preferably everyday.

What's the average file size? I find if there is lots of small files the transfer time blows through the roof. 500mb of html takes much longer than 4Gb of 1 video file.

My first thoughts would be for you to try a firewire raid setup, but it is probably to do with your read speed off the source drive as well. Some raid types will perform better for seek times and sustained transfer.

At this stage, I use external ATA 160 GB drive via FW 400 port to back up my MBP. It takes about 2 hrs to do a full backup via Super Duper.

Yes, FW 800 will be faster. eSata will be even faster.

According to the tests, eSata will be up to 7 times faster than FW400.

I'd suggest looking at incremental backup software.
You only copy new or changed files each day with this type of backup.
So if a file is worked on every day, then you will have a daily version available to recover from the backup.
The backup file size continues to grow, but you can overwrite with a fresh full backup every week or two to keep the size manageable.

eSata won't work on my G5, I think the newer ones have it though.

I am using psyncx i think it MAY have the incremental option.. I'll make a full backup first and see what it does.
