NAS Recommendations please!
Hello everyone,
After purchasing a Maxtor II Shared Storage Drive see Maxtor Shared Storage 1TB HELP!
and being TOTALLY frustrated and the fact that Maxtor can not give me answers.....(I am actually considering posting the responses of my correspondence to date with Maxtor somewhere here as a warning...let me know if anyone is interested)
I am requesting recomendations for NAS that WORKS with a Mac- preferably able to connect USB devices into it and then actually acess them....I didnt think this was too much to ask?
(Ironically this is why I bought the stupid Maxtor in the first place- I am ringing the place where I got it tomorrow to see if I can return it but I have my doubts)
SO alternatives please....and yes I do need a 1TB machine or I'd settle for 500GB as long as it worked.
Thanks people.
Bluemist.

Price range? if you want something expensive, go the follow unit here. Netgear just bought these off Infrant I think it was..
I currently have a D-Link DNS 323, which is not bad. And works well, but is only a 2 drive sata enclosure.

im using a lacie ethernet big disk extreme some nas device they sell - 500gb with a maxtor onetouch 500gb plugged into it shared over the network on the wifey's windows laptop and this mac.
though having read what you have said in the other post,
my lacie device connects as a server, i have to physically goto it via network, and log into it.
It is another machine, a server. it dosent automatically "mount" though im sure I could make it do so..
the 2nd hdd hanging off it is the same, its physically another servver with another name. a new divice i have to log into.
im not using lacie software, just logging into the share. (setup via the admin panel)
are you sure you are not trying to make it do somehitng its not designed to do?

Purana- thank you for those suggestions that expensive one looks FANTASTIC! but I cant afford it...will look into the other one though. Yes I like Raid support....so does the DLink have just one USB port or two?
asphotos- Im talking about Network Attached Storage....not your standard plug in drive...iykwim.
Ok off to do some research on the Dlink

Just the one, and I think it's only for a USB printer (as it acts as a print server). Although I don't use it, as I have a network laser printer I bought a while back, as I needed a new printer (and well I dont print in anything but black anyways)).

I use a spare PowerBook G4... with Firewire drives. Also acts as my podcast downloader, iTunes library (and hence iPod syncing), Azureus runner, and "media centre" (i.e. attached to the hifi and projector).

I use one of these bad boys. Currently running 3 x 400GB drives (RAID 5) with room for 2 more drives. Apart from it being a little noisy when the fans are running at full speed, I really can't fault it.
