Question Maxtor Shared Storage 1TB HELP!

Hi everyone,

One frustrated person here...I recently got the Maxtor Shared Storage 1TB drive.
HATING it at the moment.

My main problem with it is I plug it in -it doesnt appearon the desktop unless you connect as a user- using the Maxtor Software. (Is this normal?)

Also if I plug any other usb device into it- maxtor software says its there- but you cant actually access it. (Doesnt appear on the desktop or in finder)

Does anyone know what I am talking about here and is there something I should be doing via the Mac OS X that would remedy this problem.

How are you connecting it? I just plugged a Firewire cable into into, stuck it into my Mac (no software install) and it appears as a normal external disk.

I don't think it allows a pass-through so trying to connect via Firewire and then plugging in a USB device probably won't work.

The first method you describe sounds like you're connecting to it over a network connection, which is why it would ask for a name and password.

I assume by "USB device" you mean that you attempt to use it to share another USB drive using the Maxtor?

Sorry everyone in my total frustration I havent explained at all well.

Ok, maybe my mistake was installing the MAXTOR software (Maxtor Easy Manage) but I *had* to install it to configure the drive. It doesnt automatically ask me for a password- but in order for me to see the drive I have to go into Maxtor Easy Manage and it then automatically finds the drive connected- I then have to connect to it in order to see it. (Does that make sense)

As for how its connected its connected via my router.

I am not used to Shared Storage so not sure if I am doing it wrong. However I had my IT friend here today and couldnt solve the problem either. We tried plugging his usb drive into the maxtor and sure enough if you go to the maxtor web interface it tells us its connected and able to be accessed...however we COULDNT access it via any method we could think of. I would of though it would be standard. I cant understand WHY it would have usb ports and then not allow you to access the devices?

Again Ive started to ramble and not making sense.
Graham I dont understand how you could configure the drive (for the back ups etc) without using the software?

Anyway I think I will write to Maxtor- (more coherently than I have here!!)

Bluemist.

The drive in question is actually network storage ONLY accessed via gigabit ethernet and should appear as a local drive on a correctly configured computer. The USB ports are, according to Maxtor, for connecting extra storage devices or printer sharing. Extra USB storage has to be FAT32 partitioned.

When USB storage devices are plugged in they are declared as public shares available to all but read only access can be set if you wish. When a device is plugged in it is automatically recognised and made available as a public share which can then be mapped to a local drive letter. Note that the appliance only supports FAT32 partitions on USB devices.
