Yeah it should work, it says it has OSX compatibility

Only thing is it'll need an optical in to work with 5.1 sound, might want to do some googling to find out if thats the case, if it does you'll be sweet - will work with dvds and games and what not

it says somthing here about optical, this is what someone said on a forum when i googled searched

Quote:
Other Thoughts: Satellite appearance grows on you. For music and PS3 I run it at a little more than half power. Any more is too much for the downstairs next door apartment. I am also not deaf. Wanted a setup with optical audio input but didn't need the power those systems come with. Settled with this. So with no digital audio input you will not get true surround sound out of a Ps3 etc unless you have a receiver

Yeah, initial seraching shows it doesnt have optical, but instead uses a matrix mode to create 3D sound from a 2 channel source

If this is the case, It can't be anywhere near as good as real digital - optical out 5.1 sound

Probably worth a bit more for a set of speakers with real 5.1 decoding if youre interested in movies and stuff, iTunes and music would be much the same however

No optical - it's got those black/orange/green 3.5mm connectors that hook up to PC sound cards. You can still get a 5.1 signal out of a Mac and into it if you get a firewire 5.1 soundcard - Zalman make one I believe.

My problem is trying to make them useful with a 360 and PS3.

heres a review I found that gives a good overview: http://www.laaudiofile.com/x540.html

An external sound card isnt worth it to get surround from $200 speakers, you should be able to get a 5.1 setup with optical in and 5.1 decoding for not much more

Logitech Z-5500's which are significantly more powerful and have optical in and decoding are only $400 on ebay - I'd give a good guess and say you'll not need more power for a while

That's the idea - but I'll be perfectly honest, thought I've been meaning to give it a go yet, I haven't done so - so it may theoretically be the way to go, but I can't vouch for it personally.

[Edit] You can get them off eBay far cheaper than that, but I agree, ultimately it's better to get something else - I wish I had.

The Z-5400/5450/5500/5550 are all better - and more expensive. They come with optical inputs too.

EB sell the 5400s for a decentish price ($300ish?), though I'd rather find somewhere else cheaper..
